Juan Monaco of Argentina and Simon Greul each traversed tricky three-set matches to advance to the second round of the If Stockholm Open.
Juan Monaco def. Jan Hernych 6-2, 5-7, 7-5
Argentina’s Juan Monaco pocketed an elusive fast-court win over the Czech Republic’s Jan Hernych on the opening day of play in Stockholm. Monaco skated through the opening set even though the Argentine donated two double-faults and hit no aces. The second set featured a host of service breaks. Hernych got the first break for 2-0, but Monaco broke back immediately. At 5-4, the Argentine earned three match points, all of which were denied. The missed opportunity took its toll on Monaco. Hernych was able to secure an immediate service break for the opportunity to serve out the set. The Czech finally leveled the match on his third set point.
The third set played out similarly to the second. Monaco got an early break, only to gift it back to Hernych. Monaco broke again for 4-2 and he was up 5-2 before dropping the next three games. He finally took the match with a final break of serve at 6-5. Monaco will play crowd favorite Joachim Johansson in the second round.
Simon Greul def. Benjamin Becker 2-6, 6-3, 7-5
Germany’s Simon Greul weathered 12 aces from countryman Benjamin Becker in his first-round victory on Monday. Greul was forced to battle from behind in the third set. Becker secured the first break of the final set at 3-2, but he gave the break back in his next service game. Greul snagged another break at 5-5 and managed to serve out the match to move into the second round. Greul will play Guillermo Garcia-Lopez next.
