    10/15/09 7:52 PM | Kelli DeMario
Stepanek and Lopez advance to final eight in Shanghai Thirteenth seed Radek Stepanek and Feliciano Lopez reached the last eight in Shanghai, passing through their third-round matches on Thursday. Both players advance to their first Masters quarterfinal of the season.

    (13) Radek Stepanek def. Stanislas Wawrinka 3-6, 7-6, 4-2

Radek Stepanek is through to the quarterfinals, following the retirement of third-round opponent Stanislas Wawrinka. The Swiss joins Juan Martin Del Potro, Andy Roddick, Gael Monfils, Jose Acasuso, Mischa Zverev and Tommy Haas, all succumbing to illness or injury this week.

The veteran Czech had rallied to force a deciding set when Wawrinka, citing a stomach issue, retired at the two-hour and 22-minute mark.

Stepanek will face sixth seed Nikolay Davydenko in the next round. The Russian bested 10th seed Fernando Gonzalez in the round of 16, 6-3, 7-5.

Feliciano Lopez def. Jurgen Melzer 5-7, 7-6, 6-1

Feliciano Lopez came from a set down to dismiss Jurgen Melzer 5-7, 7-6, 6-1 after two hours and nine minutes of play. The Spaniard struck 15 aces and converted three of four break-point chances to book a spot among the final eight. The unseeded 28-year-old, currently ranked 41st, secured his first quarterfinal berth since Marseilles last February.

Lopez meets ninth seed Robin Soderling for a place in the semis. The Swede downed fifth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-3, 6-3 Thursday afternoon.
