Juan Martin Del Potro was forced to retire with a right wrist injury Wednesday afternoon, unable to complete his second-round match. The Argentine lost the first set 5-7 and trailed 1-2 in the second, calling it a day at the 76-minute mark.
Del Potro fell in his opening round match in Tokyo a week ago, hampered by a stomach ailment.
The 21-year-old becomes the third top-10 seed to crash out in early in Shanghai, joining seventh seed Fernando Verdasco (lost to Ljubicic) and fourth seed Andy Roddick, who retired with a knee injury on Tuesday (lost to Wawrinka).
