Andy Roddick was forced to withdraw during his opening-round match with Stanislas Wawrinka at the Shanghai Masters late Tuesday. The fourth seed retired at 4-3 in the first set, citing a knee injury.
Andy Roddick suffered his second consecutive early-round exit, as a knee injury halted his campaign in Shanghai. The fourth-seeded American led 4-3 in the opening set when he called it a day.
The 27-year-old has stumbled since his epic five-set Wimbledon final loss to world No. 1 Roger Federer. Roddick fell in the third round of the US Open, then bowed out in the first round in Beijing.
With the retirement on Tuesday, the American leaves his place in the ATP World Tour finals uncertain. Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and Juan Martin Del Potro have successfully qualified.
Wawrinka moves through to face 13th seed Radek Stepanek in the next round. The Czech dismissed Andreas Beck in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4.
