Nikolay Davydenko, Fernando Gonzalez and Radek Stepanek are through to the round of 16 at the Shanghai Masters. Each player completed his second-round match in straight sets.
(6) Nikolay Davydenko def. Igor Kunitsyn 6-4, 6-2
Nikolay Davydenko eased into the round of 16, following his fifth career win over compatriot Igor Kunitsyn. The sixth seed struck eight aces and held nine of nine service games during the 72-minute clash. Davydenko ended the day winning 84% of his first-service points.
Davydenko earns a second consecutive victory against his countryman, having defeated Kunitsyn at the China Open last week. The 28-year-old advances to face 10th seed Fernando Gonzalez for a spot in the quarterfinals.
(10) Fernando Gonzalez def. (Q) Thomaz Bellucci 6-3, 6-4
Fernando Gonzalez continued his smooth progress in Shanghai, taking out qualifier Thomaz Bellucci in straight sets. Gonzalez, who did not surrender serve in the match, converted two of 11 break-point chances. The 29-year-old Chilean won 32 of 40 points on first serve en route to a 6-3, 6-4 victory in 82 minutes.
Gonzalez trails Davydenko 0-5 in the head-to-head.
(13) Radek Stepanek def. Andreas Beck 7-5, 6-4
Thirteenth seed Radek Stepanek reached the third round after posting a 7-5, 6-4 win over German Andreas Beck. The veteran Czech saved five of five break points and crushed 15 aces, sealing the victory in an hour and 46 minutes. The 30-year-old improves his season record to 38-16.
Stepanek will take on Stanislas Wawrinka in the round of 16. The Swiss booked a place in the third round when fourth seed Andy Roddick retired with a knee injury.
