Marin Cilic will have plenty of time to rest up for the Paris Masters event. The No. 12 seed was knocked out of Shanghai in the opening round by Tomas Berdych.
Tomas Berdych came back from a startling deficit to defeat Croatia’s Marin Cilic in three tough sets. The Czech was first up to miss big opportunities. In the opening set, Berdych had a 5-3 advantage and a number of opportunities to take the lead in the match. Cilic came back to break and ultimately force a tiebreaker.
The first-set breaker was a closely contested affair, with Berdych just pulling ahead 10-8. The second set was all Cilic. Berdych never had a break point chance; Cilic had four and converted one. The Croat had the clear momentum headed into the third set.
Cilic took control of the third set early on. Berdych was broken and went down 0-40 at 2-4. The Czech was able to fight back to deuce and eventually held serve. Cilic lost the plot in the match from that point on, as Berdych stormed back to win the next four games and with them, the match.
Berdych’s record improves to 2-0 over Cilic. The Czech will take on Marat Safin in the second round.

Hi chris thefanchild..... have read a few of your articles on bleacher......really enjoyed them!!!
cilic......very talented...but somehow doesnt surprise me...see the way he plays!? against rafa...against murray?? so aggressive....it must take a lot outta him.....to get past those two.....then he is all out of steam next time around......but one to watch for the future...i dont 'feel'....he has arrived yet though..........

malty: I really like Cilic and I think there's loads of room for improvement, some of those shots are really wild! Also think he moves much better than Delpot. Berdych is one heck of a dangerous "outsider" though, isn't he?

I guess two good weeks in a row this time of year is a lot to ask even for a hungry kid like Cilic.
