(10) Fernando Gonzalez def. Mischa Zverev 7-5, 6-7, 2-2 (retired)
Tenth seed Fernando Gonzalez advanced to round two on Monday when Mischa Zverev was forced to retire with injury. The German had been struggling with an abdominal, but rallied to win the second-set tie-break 7-0. Early in the decider, Zverev fell awkwardly onto his right hand as he retrieved a lob. At 2-2, the 21-year-old called it quits after an hour and 55 minutes. Gonzalez improves his season record to 37-13.
The Chilean will take on qualifier Thomaz Bellucci in the second round. The Brazilian came through his opening-round match with qualifier Marco Chiudinelli in straight sets.
(13) Radek Stepanek def. Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-3, 6-0
Thirteenth seed Radek Stepanek needed just 57 minutes to dispatch Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-3, 6-0. The Czech rebounded well after suffering an early exit in Tokyo last week (lost to Gulbis). The 30-year-old converted four of six break-point chances and won 96% of his first-service points. Stepanek had not battled Ferrero since their 2006 meeting at Wimbledon, where the Czech sealed a victory at 11-9 in the fifth set.
Stepanek advances to face Andreas Beck in round two. The German reached the second round on Sunday, as opponent Jose Acasuso retired early in the second set.
