Tournament seeds Fernando Gonzalez and Radek Stepanek take to the court for their opening-round matches at the Shanghai Masters 1000 on Monday. The 13th-seeded Czech meets Juan Carlos Ferrero for the fourth time.
(10) Fernando Gonzalez vs. Mischa Zverev
Tenth seed Fernando Gonzalez makes his return after an early-round exit at the China Open. The Chilean bowed out to wildcard and former World No. 1 Marat Safin in round two, 6-3, 6-4. Gonzalez begins the week with a solid 36-13 record. The 29-year-old, a title winner in Vina del Mar, has advanced to the quarterfinals or better in seven tournaments.
Zverev looks to recover after a 6-4, 6-3 opening-round loss to eventual champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in Tokyo. The 22-year-old is a modest 15-23 in 2009. The German successfully snapped a run of six consecutive first-round losses with a win in Bankgok at the end of September (def. Mayer).
(13) Radek Stepanek vs. Juan Carlos Ferrero
Radek Stepanek leads Juan Carlos Ferrero 2-1 in the series, headed into the first-round clash on Monday. The players have not met since Wimbledon 2006, when a third-round victory went to the Czech 11-9 in the fifth set.
Stepanek stumbled last week, losing an opening-round match to qualifier Ernests Gulbis in Tokyo, 6-4, 6-4. The 30-year-old is 36-16 this season and a champion in Brisbane and San Jose.
Ferrero reached the second round in Beijing before falling to countryman and fifth seed Fernando Verdasco. The former World No. 1, who holds a 35-17 record in 2009, earned career-title No. 12 earlier this season in Casablanca.
