Mikhail Youzhny knocked out eighth seed Lleyton Hewitt Saturday afternoon, advancing to contest the championship against second seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. The Russian downed the Australian, 6-2, 5-7, 7-6.
Mikhail Youzhny posted his first career-win over Lleyton Hewitt on Saturday, prevailing in a tough three-set semifinal clash, 6-2, 5-7, 7-6. After splitting the first two sets, the Australian hit a forehand error to set up match point for the Russian. Youzhny booked a place in the championship match as Hewitt netted a backhand.
The 27-year-old completed the two-hour and 40-minute match with 10 aces and three of 5 break points converted. Youzhny advances to his second ATP World Tour final of the season, having reached the same stage in Munich (lost to Berdych). The Russian, who holds a 4-5 lifetime record in finals, improves his year mark to 32-25.
Youzhny faces World No. 7 and second seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on Sunday. The Frenchman defeated fourth-seeded compatriot Gael Monfils, 6-3, 6-3. Tsonga downed Youzhny in their only career-meeting at the 2008 Australian Open.
