Russia’s Marat Safin took out an uninspired Fernando Gonzalez in straights sets at the China Open on Thursday.
Marat Safin has his good days and his bad days on the tennis court. Lately his days have mostly landed on the bad side, but this was not the case on Thursday. Safin played his best tennis in months and he took advantage of an out-of-sorts Gonzalez to capture a straight-set victory and passage to the quarterfinals where he will meet top seed Rafael Nadal.
Safin served well throughout the match. The Russian sent six aces past Gonzalez in the opening set alone. Gonzalez had one chance to break, but could not convert. Safin took better advantage of his opportunities. He secured a single service break to take a comfortable 6-3 lead.
The Russian continued his solid play into the second set. Another six aces and a 70% first-serve percentage pretty much sealed Gonzalez’s fate. The Chilean won a dismal three points on Safin’s serve for the entire set and did not win a single point off the Safin first serve.
