    Tokyo - Berdych and Hewitt advance, Youzhny ousts Simon Tomas Berdych and Lleyton Hewitt move through to the Japan Open quarterfinals after posting second-round victories on Thursday. Third seed Gilles Simon fell to Mikhail Youzhny in three hard-fought sets.

    Mikhail Youzhny def. (3) Gilles Simon 7-6, 6-7, 6-4

    Mikhail Youzhny extended his lifetime lead to a perfect 4-0 over Metz title-winner Gilles Simon in the round of 16, holding on to win in three sets, 7-6, 6-7, 6-4. After splitting the first two sets, the Russian earned a key break in the decider to close in two hours and 40 minutes. The 27-year-old, through to his seventh quarterfinal berth in 2009, completed the day with 8 aces and 80% of his first-serve points won.

    Youzhny will take on fifth seed Tomas Berdych for a place in the semifinals. Berdych cruised through his second-round match with Andreas Beck, 6-4, 6-1.

    Fifth seed Tomas Berdych continues his smooth progress in Tokyo, knocking out Andreas Bech in straight sets. The defending champion saved four of four break points during the match, easing to a 6-4, 6-1 win in just 84 minutes. The 24-year-old Munich champion ended the match with 15 aces and four of 10 break-point chances converted.

    Berdych and quarterfinal-round opponent Mikhail Youzhny have competed nine times. The Russian holds a slender 5-4 lead in the series.

    (8) Lleyton Hewitt def. Fabrice Santoro 3-6, 6-3, 6-1

    Former Japan Open champion Lleyton Hewitt rallied to defeat veteran Fabrice Santoro in one hour and 52 minutes early Thursday. The eighth seed, who pocketed five breaks of the Santoro serve, took four consecutive games after leading 3-1 in the deciding set. The 28-year-old Australian improves his 2009 season mark to 32-18

    Hewitt advances to face Edouard Roger-Vasselin in the quarters. The Frenchman dug out of a set deficit to down Jurgen Melzer in the round of 16, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
