An ailing Juan Martin Del Potro fell in the first round of play at the Japan Open on Tuesday. The US Open champion and top seed bowed out to qualifier Edouard Roger-Vasselin in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.
Juan Martin Del Potro, in his first appearance since capturing the US Open title, crashed out of the opening round in Tokyo early Tuesday. The tournament’s top seed, visibly hampered by a stomach bug, lost to French qualifier Edouard Roger-Vasselin 6-4, 6-4 in 89 minutes.
The 189th-ranked Roger-Vasselin secured his first break of the match at 4-4, placing him in position to serve for the opening set. The 25-year-old converted his fourth set-point opportunity, sealing the first set 6-4. Del Potro, who had called the trainer in between sets, dropped serve at 2-2. Roger-Vasselin held for the remainder of the match, closing the second set 6-4. The qualifier completed the contest with nine aces and six of six break points saved.
The Frenchman moves through to face Jurgen Melzer in the second round. The Austrian downed Argentine Leonardo Mayer in straight sets 7-6, 6-3 .

i forget about viruses, microbes, malaise, lethargy; all the things that make traveling hazardous. and it can't be all that comfortable even in first class on a long flight for such a big guy. don't think he has his own customized jet yet, or does he?
on the positive side, gives delpo more time to adjust and hope he gets lots of practice in before shanghai

i had a feeling Edouard Roger-Vasselin played really well, some scorching ground-strokes were on a display.
