    Japan Open - Simon, Berdych and Hewitt advance Tournament seeds Gilles Simon, Tomas Berdych and Lleyton Hewitt all made successful starts in Tokyo on Tuesday. The players advance to the second round after posting victories in straight sets.

    (3) Gilles Simon def. (WC) Takao Suzuki 6-3, 6-4

    Bangkok champion and third seed Gilles Simon needed a little over an hour to move into the second round, downing wildcard Takao Suzuki in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. The Frenchman, who did not lose serve during the match, snagged 27 of 34 points on first serve, ending the day with nine aces.

    Simon awaits the winner of the first-round battle between Mikhail Youznhy and Thomaz Bellucci.

    (5) Tomas Berdych def. (WC) Go Soeda 6-2, 6-4

    Fifth seed and defending champion Tomas Berdych did not face a break point during his opening-round clash with wildcard Go Soeda on Tuesday. The Czech, converting three of seven break-point chances, won 36 of 44 service points en route to notching a 6-2, 6-4 victory in one hour and 10 minutes.

    Berdych will take on either Rainer Schuettler or Andreas Beck for a place in the quarterfinals.

    (8) Lleyton Hewitt def. (WC) Tatsuma Ito 6-1, 7-5

    Former Japan Open title-winner Lleyton Hewitt overcame a tricky second set against opponent Tatsuma Ito, scoring an 83-minute win in straight sets. After trailing 0-3 in set two, the eighth-seeded Australian took three consecutive games to level the second set. The 28-year-old pocketed four of seven break points and improves his season record to 31-18.

    Hewitt meets Fabrice Santoro in the second round. The veteran Frenchman rallied to knock out Andrey Golubev in the opening round, 6-7, 7-6, 6-2 in two hours and 37 minutes.
