  • Djokovic won't let ranking battle distract

    10/6/09 9:24 AM | Johan Lindahl
Djokovic won't let ranking battle distract After his quietly successful start in Beijing, Novak Djokovic is much more concentrated on his tennis than any ranking gains he might eventually make.

The Serb knows that a dream No. 1 for 2009 is well out of bounds, with Roger Federer already clinching that honor as the Swiss rests after reaching the finals of all four Grand Slams and winning two of them.

Rafael Nadal is making his own comeback this week in China while No. 3 Andy Murray is awaiting word on his current wrist injury situation from doctors. While the rest of his elite rivals go about their business, that's exactly the strategy that Djokovic is employing. He is playing his matches and worrying about little else.

"This week matters a lot ranking-wise, but it's important not to pay attention too much to the rankings. You can also lose your focus on the priority of playing well on the court. I'm trying to be patient and take one match, one tournament at a time."

After hooking up over the summer with American Todd Martin as a supplementary coach to longtime mentor Marian Vajda, Djokovic is expecting to make ever more progress.

"The results will come if I play well. I've been playing at the highest level in tennis for the last three or four years, and I know what it feels like. It's a matter of consistency, especially these days when you have Murray, Nadal, Federer, and (US Open champion Juan Martin) Del Potro as your main opponents and rivals for the top spots in the world.

"They are playing so well and so consistent, and in order to keep up you have to do the same and even better."

lets put it this way: Nole number 3 again in 10 days. Murray owes 1000 points for last year Madrid, currently not playing; Nole will earn some points in Beijing and that's about it...

yep, and i will add that since roddick's out, nole better make it to the finals at least. when do the madrid points drop off?

mriidula, points drop off on the 17th. sucks that andy can claim he lost his ranking due to injury as well! to prove that he deserves it, Nole needs to win this thing :)

well andy only got the number 2 ranking due to nadal's injury! so no gain, no loss :P
and if u think abt it, djokovic has been pretty damn consistent this year - 7 finals is not bad at all

yea..roland garros is the only serious blemish. tho the finalists are never remembered, the winners are. hope he manages to do just that little bit better with TM's help (who I'm now starting to like..)
