Marat Safin easily dispatched Argentina’s Jose Acasuso on Tuesday in Beijing. American James Blake had a more difficult time snagging his first round win.
Marat Safin def. Jose Acasuso 6-4, 6-2
Mercurial Russian Marat Safin will play at least one more match in China. The Russian took out Jose Acasuso with little effort, as the clay courter wilted under the pressure of Safin’s big game. The match lasted just one hour. Safin was able to send 6 aces past Acasuso during that time. The speed of the court proved to be Acasuso’s undoing. The Argentine could not handle Safin’s pace of shot, and his own serve did not have enough bite on it to keep Safin from breaking him once in the first set and twice in the second. Safin, who is participating in his last year on the ATP tour, will take on No. 7 seed Fernando Gonzalez in the second round.
James Blake def. Florian Mayer 6-3, 3-6, 6-3
American James Blake continued to struggle with his form, but he was able to move into the second round of the China Open with a first round defeat of Florian Mayer. The first set featured a number of sloppy service games, including one from Blake. The American was able to break Mayer twice though, and so took the early lead. More service breaks marred the second set as well. Blake was the more erratic of the two men, and was broken twice early in the set as a result. The American found his way in the third set a bit better. He was able to stave off 5 break points and converted one of his own to get the victory.
