Metz champion Gael Monfils had an easy straight set win over Turkish qualifier Marsel Ilhan in the first round in Tokyo on Monday.
Gael Monfils def. Marsel Ilhan 6-2, 6-4
France’s Gael Monfils needed just over an hour to dispatch of Turkish hopeful Marsel Ilhan. The No. 4 seed sent 15 aces past Ilhan in the brief match. The first set was dominated by Monfils. The Frenchman broke Ilhan twice in 3 tries. Ilhan had 3 chances to break the Monfils serve, but he was unable to take the opportunities. The second set was slightly more competitive. Ilhan staved off 2 of the 3 break points against him, but he was once again unable to dent the Frenchman’s serve. Monfils fought off both of the break points against him to take the match in straight sets. Monfils will take on Marco Chiudinelli of Switzerland in the second round.
Marco Chiudinelli def. Dudi Sela 4-6, 6-1, 6-4
Switzerland’s Marco Chiudinelli will join countryman Stanislas Wawrinka in the second round of the Japan Open. After a slow start, the Swiss man defeated Israel’s Dudi Sela in 3 sets. Sela played well in the opening set. He lost just 7 points on serve and he did not face a break point on his way to a 6-4 lead. The Swiss man found his game in the 2nd set. Sela’s first serve percentage dropped from 64% in the first set to 57% in the second. Chiudinelli was able to take advantage with 2 service breaks. Sela continued to struggle on serve in the third. The Israeli faced 5 break points. He held 4 of them off, but the single break was all Chiudenelli needed to take the victory.
