The China Open, headlined by No. 1 seed and No. 2 player in the world Rafael Nadal, kicks off in Beijing on Monday. Also taking part in an impressive field are Novak Djokovic, Andy Roddick, Fernando Verdasco, and Robin Soderling.
For once, Rafael Nadal is the healthy one.
Well, Nadal is at least healthy enough to have been given the green light for this week's 500-point event in Beijing and reportedly the remainder of the indoor season. Roger Federer, on the other hand, is probably out until November to rest a back injury and Andy Murray is sidelined with a wrist problem.
Nadal, who has been plagued by knee tendinitis and an abdominal straight throughout the second half of the season, is making his first appearance since the U.S. Open this week as the No. 1 seed at the China Open. And even though Federer and Murray are out, the second-ranked Spaniard is joined by an impressive cast of players in what is an incredibly strong field for a 32-man event.
Three more Top 10 stars round out the first four seeds in Beijing; Novak Djokovic, Andy Roddick, and Nikolay Davydenko. Davydenko is coming off a title in Kuala Lumpur, while Djokovic and Roddick are returning to the ATP Tour for the first time since 2009's final Grand Slam in New York.
Of course it does not stop there at the China Open. Indoor-court guru Robin Soderling, Kuala Lumpur runner-up Fernando Verdasco, Kuala Lumpur semifinalist Fernando Gonzalez, and U.S. Open quarterfinalist Marin Cilic make up the remainaing four seeds. Unseeded threats to watch this week include Juan Carlos Ferrero, David Ferrer, Tommy Robredo, struggling Marat Safin and James Blake, and Bangkok runner-up Viktor Troicki.
Should all eight seeded players navigate a host of trouble en route to the quarterfinals, Nadal would meet Gonzalez, Davydenko would face Cilic, Roddick would go up against Soderling, and Djokovic would take on Verdasco in a rematch of a U.S. Open quarterfinal clash.

Oh, what a cutie in this picture!
Watching Rafa play for me is like going to the dentist, I get so wound up in anticipation, and if he is playing well, it doesn't hurt at all, but if things are not going his way, then not even the aneasthetic blurs my pain. Sometimes I feel so bad when he is losing that I just want to turn the TV off and go for a long walk and pretend it's not happening. When Rafa lost to S'ling at RG, I couldn't sleep, normally nothing comes between me and my sleep, but it was so upsetting. I keep saying to myself 'Get over it, you are not his mother'. I sometimes wish I was not so obsessed with Rafa as a tennis player, then I could enjoy his matches with gay abandon.
I also get a feel for Rafa's form once the match starts, although at the start of the match with Delpo at the USO, I thought he was in good form, but once he dropped his serve in the first set, he just seemed to lose concentration, and because he couldn't serve well because of his stomach pain, he probably lost heart.
I saw a video of Uncle Toni trying to change Rafa's servis motion so that he doesn't put too much strain on his stomach, so I don't know what to expect.
Rafa, make Beijing yours, and pick up the trophy again like you did last year at the Olympics.

relax carrie, it's only a Masters event..
torres9 , 10/5/09 11:35 AM
^^ It doesn't matter if it is a masters or a grand Slam..fans get excited and are happy when their favorite player is playing or sad when they are losing.
Just like your emotions are for your favorite player.Maybe not to the same extent but no one should judge another person.
alik , 10/5/09 12:09 PM
Is it masters? I dont think china open is a masters... its a 500 tourny...
I'm here in the same side with carrie..... Sometimes i feel disturbed bcos my mood depends so much on how Rafa played. But I will ever be in debt of rafa for the countless times he has put a smile on my face.
Gud Luck RAFA!!

vrael , 10/5/09 3:11 PM
carrie,
I can relate to your feelings about how you get so involved when Rafa plays. I invest a lot of energy every single time. I was devastated by his loss at RG. I broke down in the worst way. I think that one will always haunt me. The only thing that can possibly make it go away is Rafa winning RG in 2010.
I will say that I am not as nearly as nervous as I am when Rafa is playing in a grand slam. There is so much more at stake. I would consider myself just eager to see Rafa play, not so much anxious. I want to see him serve and get a feeling for where he's at with his game. Then I will know if I need to worry or not. But I am just so grateful to see him back, that sometimes I try to stay in the moment and just enjoy it. That's what I did in the US Open.

Torres! I have been a fan of Rafa \nadal for years. I adore his dynamic tennis! no one plays like him, so much intensity he is amazing, boring is you with your comments! lol..
Carrie, I know exactly how you feel, being a Rafa fan is really hard right now its so hard to watch him if he isn't playing well which he hasn't been (by his standards) for some time and yet he still managed a good clay season. I was devastated by his RG loss, but knew he wasn't right.
Lets hope Rafa has a great tourney and regains his confidence, the sight of him biting another trophy would be awsome. Vamos Rafa indeed!!!!!

During his pre-tournament presser, this is what Rafa had to say about his injuries:
Q: Follow up question: some people say your style of tennis makes you more prone to injury- so aggressive- is that something you?ve thought about changing?
??A: A lot of people have a lot of opinions. There?s a lot of talk, but you know what, I started being professional tennis player at 16 years old. So that?s probably not the best time to start when your body is not completely done. I have had seven years under my belt already- I think that?s a very long career already, no? Lots of players start at 21 and finish at 29. I?ve played the last five years without going out of number one or number two, except one week this year, so if you?re not fit and your body is not in good conditions its impossible to be five years in the top two. Everybody said that in 2005, and we are in 2009 and I?m still at the same number. I always work hard to be okay, and that?s what I?m going to do all my career, and yeah, I have aggressive style of game, but I think no one can choose what style to play. I do all in my hands to play my best tennis, sure I would love to serve like Karlovic and volley like Federer, but my game is another. I?m happy with my game. With my game I have a very good career right now. If I play 3 more years 3 more years?1 more year, 1 more year?10 more years, 10 more years?but it?s impossible to say right now that I?m going to change the style of the game.

Rafa is not boring. If he is, then the whole of the ATP tours is even more boring.
luckystar , 10/6/09 9:16 AM
If any Rafan called Federer boring, they would be called a Fed hater, but torres continuously comes up with ridiculous asides against Rafa which bear no resemblance to reality, so I just try and ignore him now. All he is trying to do is wind Rafans up.
torres once said that Rafa's game had no variety, and when challenged this was what he said:
Cheryl, I was exaggerating when I say 'no variety'.^^
torres9 , 7/17/09 9:23 PM
I rest my case.
carrie , 10/6/09 9:16 AM
'being a Rafa fan is really hard right now'
-TRUE. Being a Rafa fan requires extreme bad taste..LOL
torres9 , 10/6/09 9:39 AM
hilarious torres
seriously, i don't get you. you post on almost every thread slagging off rafa and his fans. sometimes when the topic isn't related to him. then when he was injured over the summer, you were saying how you wanted him to return to playing tennis. you're really starting to make the board an unpleasant place. i don't know any other fed fans who continually fill the place with rafa hatred. they tend to stick to posting stuff about fed
Sib69 , 10/6/09 12:11 PM
Sib69, I don't get fans who likes a boring player.
torres9 , 10/6/09 12:44 PM
how is he boring?
Sib69 , 10/6/09 12:55 PM
and if he's so boring, why do you keep talking about him? you mention him more than you mention federer
Sib69 , 10/6/09 12:58 PM
torres9, you really show little respect for others. Your opinion is yours, we have our opinions. Do you want us to spoil all threads about Fed in future, just like what you are doing now for Nadal's? You call Nadal boring, that is your problem, we dont. We do not need to explain to you or justify why we like Nadal or find him interesting. You find him boring that's your choice, we need not be like YOU!
luckystar , 10/6/09 1:24 PM
How is he not boring?
torres9 , 10/6/09 2:02 PM
Rafa is thro' to the 2nd round, he had to work hard to overcome Baghdatis who played very well, but it was a good workout for Rafa. 6:4 3:6 6:4. I'm sure he'll get better and better as time goes on.
VAMOS RAFA!
carrie , 10/6/09 2:04 PM
Torres9..I know that you have freedom of speech on this site but like the other poster said you are making this site very uncomfortable to visit and to even post a comment about Rafa because you will always have something negative to say.
Do you just want attention or something?
Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
Rafa fans can't even come on TT and talk about Rafa because you are in every thread posting unpleasant things and it's not nice at all.
Maybe that's what you want..people to entertain you..talk to you..well I'm done entertaining you.
alik , 10/6/09 2:58 PM
^^ seems like you would have enough dignity and respect to act civilized!
alik , 10/6/09 3:04 PM
The best treatment for torres is to give him deaf ears and ignore him. By attacking him, he'll think he's getting through to annoy us.
carrie , 10/6/09 3:22 PM
How is he not boring?
torres9 , 10/6/09 2:02 PM
brilliant. i notice you didn't answer my question. because you can't. rafa can never be called boring. even when he loses, he keeps me glued to the screen til the last shot. he always fights til the end. in fact, most of the best matches of this year are ones he's featured in. like that one against nando in ao. how the hell can that be called boring? 5+ hours of amazing tennis. and when he fought off 5 match points in indian wells. incredible
Sib69 , 10/6/09 6:05 PM
Sib69,FYI the tennis channel is showing the Madrid semi-finals match between rafa and novak on wednesday.
alik , 10/6/09 6:28 PM
:O. thanks alik! i missed that when it was on originally as i was on holiday. i was gutted when i found out how good it was
Sib69 , 10/6/09 6:33 PM
'brilliant'
-Yes. I am brilliant. Thank you.
torres9 , 10/6/09 8:17 PM
guys actually torres will find it extremmely embarassing to admit how silly he has been acting and how pathetic his posts have been at times so thats why he keeps coming up with these stubborn posts ..lol...so kindly ignore and give this guy some time...he isnt that bad after all ..lolz ;)
vamosrafa , 10/6/09 10:25 PM
rafa is boring...lolllzzzz
-the guy is part of the BEST MATCH EVER IN TENNIS!!! he won that match!!!wimb 08 final..and i think torres thinks only federer made it the best..lollz...but sorry mate why hasnt federer been able to produce as memorable as that with other player???ooo!!! nadal-verdasco mtch is still labeled to be among the best this year...so is the Oz open final!!! his madrid mtch against djo was the best 3-set match EVER perhaps in the eyes of many!! wimb 07 final was the best mtch of the year too!! no matter what opponent rafa has a habbit of producing the MOST ENTERTAINNG AND BEST MACTHES again and again and again....;p list goes on..infinitely long ;p
vamosrafa , 10/6/09 10:32 PM
If we say Rafa is boring or Roger or one of the world top tennis players is, I think either the person is out of his mind or a jealous guy or absolutely a hater....
tettylds , 10/7/09 3:34 AM
tettylds - dont worry about. I bet almost 50 percent of people who would call themselves tennis fans think Gilles Simon is boring. Just dont pay attention.
RickyDimon , 10/7/09 7:18 AM
Ricky, I think you are right...
