Juan Carlos Ferrero wraps up Day 1 in Beijing with a straight-set win over Nicolas Almagro on Monday night. Ferrero is joined in round two by Tommy Robredo, an easy winner over Benjamin Becker.
Juan Carlos Ferrero d. Nicolas Almagro 7-5, 7-6(3)
Ferrero dispatched Almagro in straight sets on Monday night to reach the second round of the China Open. The world No. 20 needed one hour and 37 minutes to take this all-Spanish clash and set up a meeting with either Robby Ginepri or No. 5 seed Fernando Verdasco. Neither player could break serve until 5-5 in the first set, when Almagro finally cracked. Ferrero, who saved four break points earlier in the set, served out the opening frame with ease following his critical break.
Once again in the second set, Almagro's serve let him down when he needed it most. The world No. 29 broke Ferrero once en route to a 5-4 advantage, but played a dismal service game while attempting to force a third set and got broken at 15. Two games later, a tiebreaker was necessary to decide set two. Ferrero earned a mini-break at 3-2 and did not lose another point the rest of the way, capitalizing on his first match point with Almagro serving at 3-6. Almagro finished with 10 aces and three-double faults, while Ferrero recorded nine aces and three doubles. The difference was second-serve points won and break points saved; Ferrero saved eight of nine break points and won 54 percent of the points in which he got a look at a second offering from his opponent.
Tommy Robredo d. Benjamin Becker 6-2, 6-1
Robredo thrashed a slumping Becker in just 52 minutes at the China Open on Monday. The world No. 17 served just as well as his big-serving opponent, and that spelled doom for Becker since he is no match for Robredo from the back of the court. Robredo lost a mere four points in his first four service games, so two breaks were more than enough for him to ease through the opening frame of play.
The veteran Spaniard was even more dominant in the second set, dropping only three points in four service games. Becker, at the same time, saw his serve completely collapse. The German put in 47 percent of his first deliveries, won three of nine second-serve points, and saved zero of the two break points he faced. Robredo, who fired four aces to no double-faults and won 27 of 29 first-serve points, awaits either Jeremy Chardy or No. 6 seed Robin Soderling.
