The big-serving Croat Ivo Karlovic was knocked out of Beijing in the first round on Monday by Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber. Julien Benneteau of France also moved through.
Julien Benneteau def. Marcos Daniel 6-3, 6-4
France’s Julien Benneteau had little difficulty getting past Brazilian Marcos Daniel. The Frenchman is at his best on fast indoor courts, and his skill on the surface was in full evidence on Monday. In the grand tradition of Brazilian tennis, Daniel is a clay-court specialist who struggles when he is forced to play off the dirt. Benneteau served well in the match, striking 13 aces and serving at 72 percent. Daniel had 4 chances to break serve (once in the first set and three times in the second), but Benneteau was equal to the task. The Frenchman secured a single break of serve in each set for the win.
Philipp Kohlschreiber def. Ivo Karlovic 7-6(6), 4-6, 6-1
Kohlschreiber’s solid ground game proved to be too much for the 6'10'' Croat. The first set ended as many of Karlovic’s do – in a tiebreaker. At his height, Karlovic hits bombs for first serves and he seldom permits his opponents to break his serve. His tiebreak record is not particularly impressive (18-26 on the year) because he often gives up at least one mini-break and his return game is not his strong point. Surprisingly, the second set went to Karlovic with a single break of the German’s serve.
Karlovic sent nine aces past Kohlschreiber in the middle frame alone. The third set provided the biggest shock of all. Karlovic held serve just one time and Kohlschreiber sailed into the second round, where he will face the winner of Nikolay Davydenko and Igor Kunitsyn.
