Fernando Verdasco is through to the quarterfinals of the Malaysian Open, following his straight-sets defeat of Karol Beck late Thursday. The second seed will meet Richard Gasquet for a place among the last four.

Second seed Fernando Verdasco advanced to the final four of the Malaysian Open after knocking out Karol Beck in straight sets. The Spaniard secured six of 9 break point opportunities during the match, notching a 6-4, 6-0 in one hour and 10 minutes. Beck struggled to win points in the second set, capturing just six of 20 on serve.
Verdasco is set to square off against Richard Gasquet in the quarterfinals. The Frenchman rallied to down wildcard Joachim Johansson, 4-6, 7-6, 6-2. The Spaniard trails Gasquet 3-4 in the head-to-head, but has taken the last three consecutive contests since 2007.
(6) Tomas Berdych def. Simon Greul 6-3, 4-6, 6-3
Tomas Berdych fought through a tough round of 16 battle with Simon Greul on Thursday, prevailing 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 in two hours and 7 minutes. The sixth seed, through to his fourth quarterfinal in 2009, snagged 80% of his first-service points to win his 30th match of the season.
Berdych will take on third seed Robin Soderling for a spot in the semifinals. The Swede cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over American qualifier Brendan Evans on Wednesday.
