Gilles Simon and John Isner reach the Bangkok quarterfinals on Thursday afternoon. Marat Safin fails to join them there as he falls to Marco Chiudinelli.
(2) Gilles Simon d. Kevin Kim 6-2, 6-2
Playing his first match since retiring due to knee tendinitis in the third round of the U.S. Open, Simon looked just fine in a straight-set thrashing of Kim in his PTT Thailand Open debut on Thursday afternoon. Simon needed just one hour and one minute to set up a quarterfinal clash with either Robby Ginepri or Evgeny Korolev. The second-seeded Frenchman fired 11 aces to just one double-fault and never dropped serve while saving two break points. Simon is tough to beat when he enjoys such a performance on serve because he is so solid from the baseline, and Kim struggled to take of his own serve. Two breaks in each set were more than enough for the world No. 10 to advance in straights.
Marco Chiudinelli d. Marat Safin 6-3, 7-6(4)
Chiudinelli continued his impressive week in Bangkok by upsetting Safin in one hour and 28 minutes on Thursday afternoon to earn a spot in the quarterfinals. The 116th-ranked Swiss had already qualified for the main draw and taken out Florian Mayer in round one, but this was by far his best win--albeit against a struggling Safin. Chiudinelli used one break to take the first set, maintaining the advantage by saving all three of the break points he faced. Neither man faced even a single break point throughout the second set, with Chiudinelli dropping a mere seven points in six service games. Safin managed to force a tiebreaker, but a double-fault by the 29-year-old Russian at 2-2 proved to be the only mini-break. Chiudinelli took care of all six of his service points in the decider, closing the match out on his racket at 5-4 and 6-4. Next up for Chiudinelli is No. 1 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
(8) John Isner d. Mischa Zverev 7-6(5), 6-4
Isner got out-aced by Zverev eight to seven, but the 6'9'' American still managed to advance in straight sets after one hour and 23 minutes. Zverev had chances to win this one or at least take it to three, as he earned a rare scalp of Isner's serve to go up an early break in the first. The 50th-ranked German, however, eventually gave it back and had to go into a tiebreaker. That's where Isner excels, and after falling behind 3-1, the No. 8 seed took control the rest of the way. With momentum in hand, the 48th-ranked Isner seized a quick break in the second and held onto it from there, although he did have to save two break points. An improved all-around game allowed Isner to overcome eight aces (and no double-faults) from Zverev and book a quarterfinal date with No. 4 seed Viktor Troicki.
