Fernando Gonzalez was made to work hard during his second-round clash with qualifier Rohan Bopanna on Thursday. The fourth seed advanced to the quarterfinals of the Malaysian Open in three sets.

Fernando Gonzalez overcame a tricky second-round match on Thursday to defeat qualifier Rohan Bopanna in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. The fourth seed withstood 12 aces from the Bopanna racket- while striking a dozen himself, to cement the victory in 83 minutes. Gonzalez, through to his seventh ATP World Tour quarterfinal of the season, improves his 2009 mark to 34-11.
The 29-year-old Chilean will take on Mikhail Youzhny for a place among the final four. Gonzalez is 3-1 lifetime against the Russian, who took out wildcard Marcos Baghdatis in the round of 16.
Richard Gasquet def. (WC) Joachim Johansson 4-6, 7-6, 6-2
Richard Gasquet rallied to defeat wildcard Joachim Johansson Thursday afternoon, reaching his second straight quarterfinal berth. The Frenchman battled back from a set deficit to dismiss the Swede 4-6, 7-6, 6-2 in just under two hours of play. The 23-year-old crushed 26 aces during the match- alongside Johansson’s 24- while saving seven of 8 break points.
Gasquet faces second seed Fernando Verdasco in the next round. The Spaniard dispatched Karol Beck in straight sets late Thursday, 6-4, 6-0.
