Spaniard Fernando Verdasco has delayed foot surgery until the end of the season after realizing he would have no time to make a recovery in during the intense autumn period.
With a second seeding at this week's Malaysian Open in Kuala Lumpur, the Shanghai Masters coming soon, and his country's home Davis Cup final against the Czech Republic looming, the Australian Open semifinalist decided he just couldn't spare the time.
Verdasco, ranked ninth, is also fighting for a place at the eight-man season ending championship in London.
"I was supposed to undergo surgery on my left foot after the US Open earlier this month," he said in Kuala Lumpur. "But my doctor told me I'd need three weeks to recuperate. If I had it done, I would not be able to make it here for the Malaysian Open.
"He said that I could postpone the surgery as it would not affect me. My focus is to qualify for the World Finals and help Spain win the Davis Cup."
Verdasco also suffered with a similar abdominal strain which plagued compatriot Rafael Nadal - but he has recovered from that US Open problem he encountered in the quarter-finals in a loss to Novak Djokovic.
He said one of his remaining 2009 goals will be to celebrate a home Davis Cup victory. "I want to experience the feeling of winning at home as our victory last year was celebrated in Argentina," he said a year after helping Spain past the South Americans for the 2008 Davis Cup trophy.
