Third seed Robin Soderling needed only 57 minutes to dispatch American qualifier Brendan Evans on Wednesday, 6-1, 6-1. The Swede, returning to competition after a successful Davis Cup play-off against Romania, secured five of 16 break point opportunities during the match. Soderling, who captured 100% of his first-service points, improved his 2009 season to 35-15.
The World No. 11 awaits the winner of the second-round match between sixth seed Tomas Berdych and Simon Greul.
(5) Gael Monfils def. Denis Istomin 7-6, 7-6
Fifth seed Gael Monfils came through his opening-round clash against Denis Istomin in one hour and 36 minutes. The Frenchman, a title-winner in Metz last week, crushed 9 aces on the day en route to a straight-sets win, 7-6, 7-6.
The 23-year-old will take on Martin Vassallo Arguello in the round of 16. The Argentine took out Feliciano Lopez on Tuesday, 6-3, 6-3.
Mikhail Youzhny def. (WC) Marcos Baghdatis 6-2, 6-3
Mikhail Youznhy continued his winning ways at the Malaysian Open, downing wildcard Marcos Baghdatis in straight sets. The Russian, through to the quarterfinals, dismissed the Cypriot 6-2, 6-3 in just 68 minutes of play. The 27-year-old, who did not face a break point during the match, advances to his sixth quarterfinal appearance of the season.
Youznhy will meet either fourth seed Fernando Gonzalez or qualifier Rohan Bopanna in the quarterfinals.

Monfils apparently didn't have time to recover from winning Metz, but he certainly had enough time to completely change his hair-style. Wow.
