Tomas Berdych advanced to the round of 16 at the Malaysian Open on Tuesday, following his opening-round victory over Igor Kunitsyn. Tournament seeds David Ferrer and Lleyton Hewitt both crashed out in straight sets.

Sixth seed Tomas Berdych overcame a stern test in his opening-round match against Igor Kunitsyn on Tuesday. The Czech secured five of 9 break points on the day to capture a 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 victory in one hour and 54 minutes. The 24-year-old, who tallied five aces during the match, won 78% of his points on first serve.
Berdych moves to 29-20 on the season and awaits the winner of the first-round match between Simon Greul and Christophe Rochus.
Mikhail Youzhny def. (7) David Ferrer 7-6, 6-2
Mikhail Youzhny extended his lead in the head-to-head series to 4-2 over David Ferrer on Tuesday. The Russian knocked out the seventh seed 7-6, 6-2 in an hour and 45 minutes, notching his fourth hard-court win over the Spaniard. Youzhny converted four of 10 break-point opportunities to book a place in the second round.
The 27-year-old moves through to face Marcos Baghdatis in the round of 16. The Cypriot rallied to defeat Yen-Hsun Lu 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 on Monday.
(WC) Joachim Johansson def. (8) Lleyton Hewitt 7-6, 6-3
Wildcard entrant Joachim Johansson scored his first ATP World Tour level victory of the season on Tuesday with his straight-set dismissal of Lleyton Hewitt. The former world No. 9 saved nine of nine break points and crushed 13 aces on his way to a 7-6, 6-3 win after one hour and 40 minutes.
Johansson, returning to top-tier level competition for the first time since October 2008, will take on either Richard Gasquet or Victor Crivoi in round two.
