  • Freak accident forces Querrey out of Thailand Open

    9/29/09 5:13 AM | Ricky Dimon
Freak accident forces Querrey out of Thailand Open World No. 25 and No. 3 seed Sam Querrey is out of this week's event in Bangkok after injuring his right forearm in a freak accident on Monday. Querrey will miss at least four weeks.

Sam Querrey sat on a glass table and fell through it on Monday in Bangkok, forcing him to pull out from this week's PTT Thailand Open. The 25th-ranked American was seeded third and had a bye straight into the second round of the tournament.

After what can only be described as a simply bizarre accident, Querrey will be sidelined at least four weeks and he could even miss the rest of the season. He reportedly underwent emergency surgery and was recovering on Monday night.

Querrey had also been scheduled to play doubles with fellow American John Isner, who is seeded eighth in the singles draw and has already advanced to round two by surviving Thai wild card Kittipong Wachiramanowong in a third-set tiebreaker. Thomaz Bellucci and Marcos Daniel took their place in the doubles event, while American Donald Young is expected to assume Querrey's place in singles as a lucky loser.

"He was just bending over to tie his shoes and the table shattered," said John Tobias, president of the tennis division for Blue Entertainment Sports Television. "A piece of glass slashed his right forearm. He'll most likely be shut down for the rest of the season. But this is an injury that will heal."

"Worst day ever," Querrey wrote on his Twitter page late Monday night.
