  • Nalbandian planning his hip surgery comeback

    9/28/09 8:03 AM | Johan Lindahl
Nalbandian planning his hip surgery comeback David Nalbandian is already plotting strategy for his return to tennis with an exhibition planned at home in Argentina in December.

The South American is still recovering from spring hip surgery as has been reported to have had some light hits on the court.

The one-time world No. 3 and 2002 Wimbledon finalist against Lleyton Hewitt hopes to test himself in an exho in Buenos Aires, organisers said.

Also playing in the clay-court hit-and-giggle will be Chile's Fernando Gonzalez, Spaniard Carlos Moya, Russian Marat Safin, Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus and Argentine Juan Monaco.

Nalbandian wants to make an ATP return in January at Sydney, where he beat Finn Jarkko Nieminen for that title a year ago.

Nalbandian could hope to have as much luck in his hip recovery as did Hewitt, who since going under the knife in August, 2008, has reached a Wimbledon quarter-final after winning a clay event in April.

This exhibition sounds great (many of my favs) ... but what the ... 'hit and giggle' ?

smr, I have come across the phrase "a hit and a giggle" once before.

Having lifted the 1975 Wimbledon Ladies singles title - her sixth - Billie Jean King said that that was her last shot at the crown and that she did not expect to be back to defend it in 1976. "I might come back for a hit and a giggle", she added. And she did - but only in the doubles, where she lost a tight final. She would win one more doubles title, in 1979, to put her out front in terms of overall titles won at SW 19 - a record of 20 crowns that she now shares with her winning partner of 1979, Martina Navratilova. She also resumed singles play and made it to a few semi-finals as late as 1982 and 1983 at age 38-39.

I take it to mean that nobody is going to be busting a gut in order to win. Taking that mental approach makes sense so late in the year, I think.
