France’s Gael Monfils and Janko Tipsarevic made their way into the quarterfinals of the Open de Moselle with victories on Thursday.
Gael Monfils def. Sebastien Grosjean 6-1, 6-1
For all intents and purposes, Sebastien Grosjean is retired from tennis; he just has not announced it officially yet. The veteran Frenchman is ranked outside the top 1000, and his performance against countryman Gael Monfils showed it. The only shock of the match was that Grosjean actually managed to earn 7 break points. He even converted one, but he gave up 6 in the process. In the end, Grosjean managed to hold one time. Monfils will take on Janko Tipsarevic in the quarterfinals.
Janko Tipsarevic def. Ivan Ljubicic 6-4, 7-6(3)
Serbia’s Janko Tipsarevic also advanced in straight sets, but his opponent was the tough Croat Ivan Ljubicic. This match was quite evenly matched. Both men served at exactly 59% for the match and Tipsarevic only converted on one more break point than Ljubicic. The Serb weathered 11 aces in the two sets. The outcome of the match came down to a few crucial points that Tipsarevic managed to win. The victory marks the first for Tipsarevic over Ljubicic.
