Juan Monaco takes out Pablo Cuevas in three sets to reach the Bucharest semifinals on Friday afternoon. Monaco is now the 2009 outright leader in clay-court match victories with 28.
In Bucharest's only quarterfinal match involving two seeded players, Juan Monaco overcame Pablo Cuevas 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 in one hour and 54 minutes on Friday at the BCR Open Romania. With the victory, not only does Monaco have a place in the semifinals, but he also becomes the clay-court wins leader on the ATP Tour (28, one ahead of Tommy Robredo).
However, it did not come easy Monaco. The 37th-ranked Argentine had eased past Cuevas in two previous encounters, and for a while it looked like he would do the same once again. Monaco won 13 of 15 first-serve points in the opening frame of play and saved both of the break points he faced. As a result, two breaks were more than enough for him to dominate set one, and his second break of the set finished it off in style.
Perhaps thinking that he was on the way to another routine win over Cuevas, Monaco saw his game fall apart in the second set. He lost half of the points (10 of 20) even when he put in his first serve and that caused him to drop serve twice. At the same time, Cuevas did a much better job of taking care of his own service games. The world No. 59 saved the only break point he faced and he served things out at 5-2 to force a decisive third set.
This time it was Monaco's turn to reverse the course of the match. He resumed his aggressive tactics from the baseline while maintaining consistency and he gave his underdog opponent little chance in the final frame of play. The No. 3 seed lost a mere five points in his last four service games and never gave Cuevas a single look at a break point. Monaco won more than half of the points on both his opponent's first and second deliveries and that led to a pair of breaks. The eighth-seeded Uruguayan had little left at the end, and Monaco finished him off with another routine hold at 5-1.
Monaco improves to 3-0 lifetime against Cuevas, having prevailed 6-0, 6-4 at last year's Masters Series Rome and again earlier this season in Estoril by a 6-2, 6-4 decision. Next up for Monaco is one of two unseeded players; either Simon Greul or Maximo Gonzalez.
