Novak Djokovic's people are reportedly in hot negotiations to replace the Serb's Adidas clothing and show contract as the German sports Goliath moves to sign Andy Murray as the lead in its tennis talent stable.
Industry newsletters report that the deal is moving ahead, with No. 3 Murray, current on Fred Perry gear, set to replaces Djokovic and retiring Russian Marat Safin in the international stable.
Djokovic, meanwhile are said to be speaking with K-Swiss to replace the Adidas deal. Also on the brand: Anna Kournikova, Tommy Haas, and Mardy Fish.
Djokovic didn't play Davis Cup at the weekend, instead making a series of high-profile appearances around Belgrade. His activities included visiting a hospital, cheering his side on in the win over Uzbekistan, playing in a golf event and opening his family's fourth restaurant in Serbia.
Djokovic said he picked up his golf game during the US open, hitting the links with new part-time coach Todd Martin.
The No. 4 will get back to work on court next month, playing in Beijing, Shanghai, Basel and Paris plus the season-ending ATP event in London in November.

I agree, fedexfan.. I don't understand them..I know, Murray is no3 now, but look at his fan base...hardly noticable. :) Really, does anyone care what Murray wears on court?!
And about Kswiss- I really don't like look of their gear. I hope it's going to look better if Nole sign conract with them... :)

*signs contract... :)
OllyK , 9/24/09 12:19 PM
I'm just gonna say it was about time that Murray dressed as a proffesional tennis player and not as an amateur heading to practice with his pals. Out of the top 10 he's the worst dressed player on court.
I also don't think this is a smart move for Adidas, but it sounds like Kswiss is putting a lot of money on the table that Adidas might not be interested to spend in Djoker...
alba , 9/24/09 12:41 PM
Nole, you did it once with a racquet, please don't do it with clothing! Olja, ?ta da radimo??? I can't stand that brand!!! Looks so pore... Novak deserves the best! Please stay with Adidas or switch to Nike if it's possible! What Andy Murray? Boring defensive anti-commercial type. Novak is attractive, a magnet for the audience and tennis followers. I can's believe that Adidas doesn't recognize it! If so I hope they lose every penny they got.
Duronole , 9/24/09 12:48 PM
Besides, Murray owes 1000 points for last year's Madrid, so I'm not sure for how long he's gonna stay at the number 3 spot. Hopefully, exactly till the drop off day, October 15th (or was it 18th?). When Nole gets it again, then I'll ask Adidas about that smart move of theirs.
Duronole , 9/24/09 1:09 PM
duro, I think that we should write to Novak's menagers!! I really think that Kswiss is NOT for him! And, I agree with you, I still think that changing to Head was mistake... :/ I know, changing racket and changing shirt and snickers is not same thing..not even close...but, look what JJ done to herself by replacing Reebok with ANTA sport...
OllyK , 9/24/09 1:57 PM
Well, Olja, I happen to see it like that now. He did it with a racquet, why shouldn't he do it with a shoes and t-shirts then? I deeply regret that if it happens. Today I was watching a tie break of Nole-Fed AO 08. 50 winners from Nole's side, 32 fro Fed's. Damn racquet! He doesn't make so many winners anymore! Loops, spins, no flat forehands, no as much winners. Hopefully the clothing won't hurt his game as that racquet did.
Duronole , 9/24/09 2:24 PM
What if Adidas keeps both of them ? I don't get why they have to sign one player and throw up the other...
Nike has Roger and Rafa, why can't they have Nole and Murray ?
Emiliano55 , 9/24/09 2:35 PM
Emiliano, the problem is (and now I acuse Djokovic's stuff) that his contract with Adidas expires in the end of the year, same as in the case with Wilson last year. Wilson didn't pay enough, Head did and we all now the rest. No same Nole since then. Now, Adidas probably won't pay as K-Swiss will, so we may expect same mistake from Djokovic's side again. Shame. Damn money.
Duronole , 9/24/09 2:46 PM
If Nole still thinks it was wise decision to change racquet..he will do it again with gear..there is no doubt..
OllyK , 9/24/09 2:49 PM
sounds really gloomy. i don't want to see things take an even worse turn for nole. no fun to watch. things didn't go well after his racket change, and just before ao where he was title defender and he didn't do well in the warm up tournies in oz too. that was such a bad time.
homos , 9/24/09 2:53 PM
changing his clothes is not going to change his game one bit ! thats for sure ...
its a different story when it comes to changing racquet's .
If Djoker makes the move for the big bucks that i think its his choice ...more towards adidas loss than djokers .... all tennis athletes have to or have made these kind of decisions all the time ...so i dont think clothing is a big deal..
C'MON !!
fedexfan , 9/24/09 3:05 PM
Fedexfan, as I said in one of previous posts, for example, Jelena Jankovic changed her gear this year..she uses Anta sport now..she can't move like she used to..snickers are horrible (that is what she said)..her feet sweat more, she uses medical time out much more often cause there is always some problem with her feet..lots of calluses etc..Once she had to make a cut her snicker cause she couldn't stand pain any more!!!! I don't want that for Nole..I know Kswiss is well known brand, but I don't know, they just doesn't look confident like Adidas...None from top10 players uses Kswiss..I wonder why...
OllyK , 9/24/09 3:20 PM
I just read that K-swiss wanted Murray first..but negotiations failed..and then they turned to Nole..what is wrong with marketing ppl these days.. :O
OllyK , 9/24/09 3:34 PM
"... and show contract as the German sports Goliath moves to sign Andy Murray as the lead in its tennis talent stable. "
at least someone believes he is going to win a slam one day; good on you andy.
posmatrac , 9/24/09 4:24 PM
why is nole so money-hungry? shoes are a BIG deal!
stu , 9/24/09 4:40 PM
OllyK , i never heard about Jankovic so I'll take your word it .
I find it a little weird that she would let a problem like that prolong ...i mean these companies can custom make clothes for them ...i dont see why A company cant make another outfit like company B but just with a different logo & color .
I still find it hard to believe that clothes hinder performance on court especially at that level . Everything can be made till it fits and feels like perfection .
C'MON !!
fedexfan , 9/24/09 4:49 PM
fedexfan, you could say the same about raquets!
stu , 9/24/09 4:51 PM
fedexfan..I think it is all about materials they use...it is not just copying the model. :)
OllyK , 9/24/09 5:09 PM
I think that it's all about money. From what i have seen K-swiss doesn't have a really big name to sponsor their brand..do they?..well they have fish and someone else but they don't compare to Novak.
He will do their company a world of good.
As far as murray going to addidas..well..i don't think that it's a big deal..i like fred perry better cause it's more classy to me but...what ever...am not a fan of murray's so i don't care what he wears:) but....
I like novak and i think that with him wearing their line people will start to buy their clothes more.
They will make the shoes and all that stuff comfortable for him..no doubt.
changing a racket is waaay different than changing clothes.
alik , 9/24/09 5:30 PM
I agree with FedExfan that a clothing change is not going to hinder a player's game/performance. A shirt is a shirt and the same goes for shorts. I can see sneakers being a problem for non-sports people, but when it comes to athletes the companies make a mould of the player's feet and then consstruct sneakers to fit their feet similarly to what a podiatrist does when they order specially/custom made shoes for patients, thus eliminating caluses and other potential problems. Therefore, all things considered, it really boils down to money where the athletes are concerned when they sign a new clothing deal.
I also agree with Alik on Fred Perry clothes for Murray -- they are definitely more classy, almost like a country club with their insignia. That's his signature brand and he should stick with it, but I suppose money is the name of the game where the players are concerned. Adidas is worn by many of the players but not Perry clothing which means no more signature brand for Murray and he'll just be one of the guys on a long list of those who wear the Adidas line .
Von , 9/24/09 6:34 PM
I agree with Von...and ( omg ) with fedexfan...
Don't think it's big deal. It is just money.
Addidas is making mistake...Nole is realy more popular than Andy...( no bad feelings against Andy)
Nole is making mistake...Addidas is Addidas!
But in my oppinion, the bigest mistake is by Andy...he is player with trade mark "Made in England" so he should keep his image...and (for me) Fred Perry is more classy...much more aristocratic...
But then again...imagine if someone offers you such money...I mean ...who can resist...
zare , 9/24/09 8:00 PM
zare: "I agree with Von...and ( omg ) with fedexfan..."
LoL, you're making me laugh with "...and ( omg ) with fedexfan...". LOl again. What has he done to make you exclaim 'omg'? LOL. I don't know if he's the same guy who posts on Tennis.X, but if he is, I like him as he makes me laugh a lot. If he is, hello, Fedexfan!!!!
Von , 9/24/09 9:13 PM
Absolutely unbelievable that Adidas would drop Djokovic after he has been their number one player for two years. There is no way that Murray is ever going to have the appeal that Novak does. Bad move Adidas.
sukhumvit , 9/25/09 4:38 PM
By the way, the brand is Adidas, right? I think the headline has a big typo.
alba , 9/25/09 5:51 PM
zare: agree with you, fred perry much better 4 Andy...but ..perhaps .....he thinx 2 be linked with FP might be some kind of jinx, you know last British man to win Wimbles etc etc.
deuce , 9/25/09 6:16 PM
alba - yes, it is Adidas, as the headline indicates
RickyDimon , 9/25/09 6:56 PM
Cool, Ricky, thanks for changing it.
alba , 9/25/09 9:03 PM
" so he should keep his image...and (for me) Fred Perry is more classy...much more aristocratic.."
zare, fred perry is for classy guys only, on and off the court. and english aristocracy, ha, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TIpux2uHLF0
posmatrac , 9/26/09 1:38 AM
fedexfan, I think you'll find that Novak wasn't chasing the bucks but Adidas was wooing Murray and when he agreed to terms, Adidas decided they didn't want Djokovic.
sukhumvit , 9/26/09 3:58 AM
thanks for the insight sukhumvit . now the questions becomes why cant adidas have 2 players and what is wrong with them that they want muzz over djoker ?
C'MON !!

posmatrac , 9/26/09 7:06 AM
huh? so Johan was wrong? Oooh but I likeeee..some yellow on Nole next year!
stu , 9/26/09 3:24 PM
this is probably the reason why
http://www.sportbusiness.com/news/170457/murray-mania-gives-bri tish-economy-400m-boost
but it is said/thought nole is bigger in the states so k-swiss makes sense ....
posmatrac , 9/26/09 5:00 PM
postmatrac: think that is old article and would've only happened if Andy had won Wimbles and alas........and do business idiots really believe we can spend our way out of recession?? more alases...
deuce , 9/27/09 8:57 AM
deuce: there is a kind of research paper at http://www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/article/63584 (you'll have to register to read it), but the idea is that nole comes from smaller global market than uk + his comments on roddick in ny + his retirements last year. i think that thing with mandy winning a slam has become a joke, but i think he'll win one soon.
posmatrac , 9/27/09 5:15 PM
I dont think this is a smart move by adidas. Djoker is so much more marketable than murray will ever be .
Is djoker ditching adidas or is it the other way round ?
C'MON !!
