Maximo Gonzalez takes out Oscar Hernandez in three sets on Thursday to earn a spot in the Bucharest quarterfinals. He is joined there by Simon Greul, a straight-set winner over Daniel Koellerer.
Maximo Gonzalez d. Oscar Hernandez 7-5, 3-6, 6-1
Gonzalez overcame Hernandez in two hours and 18 minutes on Thursday afternoon to reach the quarterfinals of the BCR Open Romania. The winner did not take complete control of the match until the final set, and a tight opening frame of play saw each man break serve once en route to 5-5. Hernandez saved 10 of 12 break points in the first set, but Gonzalez's earned his second break for 6-5 and promptly served it out.
In an extremely back-and-forth affair, Hernandez recovered in set two. The 31-year-old Spaniard, who upset No. 1 seed Victor Hanescu in round one, needed just one break to even the match, as he served at 79 percent during the second set and never faced a break point. Soon, however, it was Gonzalez's turn to reverse the momentum. The 67th-ranked Argentine lost only four points in his last four service games and used two service breaks to ease through the final set. Gonzalez, who improves to 2-0 lifetime at the ATP level against Hernandez, will face Simon Greul on Friday for a spot in the Bucharest semifinals.
Simon Greul d. (6) Daniel Koellerer 6-1, 6-4
Keeping up his fine form of late, Greul dominated Koellerer in one hour and 19 minutes on Thursday afternoon to set up a quarterfinal meeting with Gonzalez. Greul served at just 37 percent in the first set, but he still lost only four points in three service games (all in the same game, in which he saved four break points). The 68th-ranked German won an amazing 10 of 15 points even when Koellerer made his first serve, and Greul's third break of the match finished off the first set in style.
Koellerer managed to make things more interesting in the second, and although he finall broke his opponent's serve, the mercurial Austrian donated his own twice more. Greul saved seven of eight break points in set two and converted two of five, the second of which ended the proceedings with Koellerer serving to stay in it at 4-5. At 28 years old, Greul appears to be playing the best tennis of his life at the moment. He reached the second round of the U.S. Open (lost to Roger Federer) then made it to the semifinals of a Challenger event before winning a Challenger title one week later.
