The injury absence of Rafael Nadal at next week's Thailand Open leaves the way theoretically clear for Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to defend his title from 2008.
And the world No. 7 now has fitness on his side after lifting the title over Novak Djokovic in 2008 just months after recovering from knee problems.
Tsonga will arrive in Asia after helping France to stay in the Davis Cup World Group, winning both of his singles matches in the tie over the Netherlands.
Tsonga goes into a field which also boasts compatriot and rival Gilles Simon feeling on his game after reaching the US Open fourth round. "I'm in a good shape. Last year I was just starting my comeback after surgery. This year I'm good and that is the difference".
Also playing in the Thai capital will be French veteran Fabrice Santoro and Russian Marat Safin, both making farewell appearances as they set themselves up to retire in little more than a month.
