Christophe Rochus def. Fabrice Santoro 0-6, 6-4, 7-6(3)
For a while, Tuesday’s match between popular French player Fabrice Santoro and Christophe Rochus of Belgium seemed headed in favor of Santoro. The Frenchman snagged the opening set with a quick and efficient 6-0 scoreline. Rochus was thrown off by Santoro’s variety and he gave up 3 service breaks as a result. The second set was better from the Belgian. He managed to level the match with two service breaks (to Santoro’s single converted break point). The third set was sloppy from both players. A full half of the games were decided by service breaks. There were 6 service breaks in all, with each man securing 3 to force the deciding set breaker. Rochus eventually took the tiebreak at 7-3 to advance to the second round.
Janko Tipsarevic def. Arnaud Clement 6-4, 6-4
Though the scoreline suggests that this match was somewhat close, Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia was never in danger for even a moment of losing the match. Frenchman Arnaud Clement did not get a whiff at a break point during the one hour, twenty minute first round match. Tipsarevic tossed in 10 aces and he secured a single break of serve in each set to neatly wrap up the win. The Serb will take on Croat Ivan Ljubicic in the second round.
