Lleyton Hewitt has absolutely nothing to lose as he looks to earn ATP ranking points with a full autumn schedule, starting with the new ATP event in Kuala Lumpur next week.
A year ago the 28-year-old Australian was recovering from hip surgery which eventually saved his career.
Now, after not playing at all last autumn, the double Grand Slam champion is keen to start lifting his ranking from No. 26. He has no points to defend until January.
Hewitt dropped from the Top 100 in February but has come back strong, with a Wimbledon quarter-final against Andy Roddick and a third-round loss at the US Open to Roger Federer.
His goal is to make into a Top 16 ranking at his home Australian Open, perpetually the focus of his season. New Aussie Davis Cup coach Todd Woodbridge believes his stalwart can make it back to seventh or eighth in the world with the combination of form, effortand perhaps some luck.
Hewitt played over the summer with a groin strain which didn't manage to keep him from the court. "This is what motivates me, playing in these big matches against Roger and having a crack at him. That's where the motivation is", he said prior to resuming the final leg of his season.

lots of people laughed at him after ao when he dropped out of the top 100 and said he wanted to get back to top 10. well, he's not top ten now but i think he's earned some respect and reminded us that you can't count him out no matter what. he's realistic, not aiming for no. 1 again, been there, knows that nadal and fed are way, way too strong for him, but top ten is a good aim to keep his motivation going. he was unlucky at ao, not fully recovered and going up against gonzo in the first round who called an mto at a crucial and questionable point in the match but never mind lleyton, we know you'll give it your best shot. hope he can make an impact at your country's biggest tennis stage.
vamos lleyton!! hope you get a good seeding for ao!!
