  • Top-seeded Hanescu sent packing by Hernandez

    9/22/09 6:22 PM | Ricky Dimon
Top-seeded Hanescu sent packing by Hernandez Romanian fans lost home favorite and No. 1 seed Victor Hanescu in the Bucharest first round on Tuesday evening. Oscar Hernandez scores the upset to join fellow Spaniards Albert Montanes and Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo in round two.

    Oscar Hernandez d. (1) Victor Hanescu 7-6(5), 6-4

Romania's own Hanescu crashed out of the BCR Open Romania on Tuesday in the very first round, falling to Hernandez in one hour and 53 minutes. Even worse for the Bucharest fans is that Hanescu was the No. 1 seed and real hopes of winning the title. Hernandez, however, put a swift end to those ideas. A competitive first set saw both players win a total of 41 points, and each man broke serve once en route to a tiebreaker. The 31-year-old Spaniard took the decider seven points to five and never looked back. He continued to handle the pressure better than his heavily-favored opponent, and Hernandez earned two breaks in the second set even though Hanescu served at 77 percent. Hernandez gave one of the breaks back, but had just enough to finish off the upset in straight sets. Maximo Gonzalez, a three-set winner over Olivier Rochus, awaits Hernandez in round two.

    (5) Albert Montanes d. Potito Starace 6-4, 6-2

Montanes improved his career record against Starace to 3-0, prevailing in one hour and 15 minutes on Tuesday to reach the Bucharest second round. The fifth-seeded Spaniard broke serve four times in eight tries and he converted both of his opportunities in the second set. Montanes also did well on his own serve, saving six of seven break points while firing four aces and no double-faults. He won more than 60 percent of his second-serve points and more than 70 percent of his first-serve points. Next up for Montanes is compatriot Marcel Granollers, who defeated Romanian wild card Petru-Alexandru Luncanu in three sets on Monday.

    Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo d. (7) Andreas Seppi 6-4, 6-4

Ramirez Hidalgo pulled off this upset in straight sets on Tuesday afternoon, but he did not book his place in the Bucharest second round without substantial difficulty. Baseline rally after baseline rally resulted in the match lasting two hours and four minutes despite a total of just 20 games being played. Seppi allowed Ramirez Hidalgo to gain the upper hand early in most of the baseline exchanges due to dreadful serving. The 56th-ranked Italian served at a dismal 42 percent and double-faulted nine times. Ramirez Hidalgo took advantage in the form of a whopping 12 break chances, of which he converted four. Seppi capitalized on just two of his nine break-point opportunities; not enough to overcome the Spaniard. The world No. 125 will battle Romanian wild card Marius Copil for a spot in the quarterfinals.
