Bjorn Phau sent countryman Rainer Schuettler packing on Monday in first round play in Metz, France. Phau wil be joined in the second round by Andreas Beck, also of Germany.
Bjorn Phau def. Rainer Schuettler 7-6(1), 7-6(5)
Bjorn Phau posted his first ever win over Rainer Schuettler in two tight sets on Monday. The loss is just one in a series of blows to Schuettler’s confidence in 2009. A year ago, he was a Wimbledon semifinalist – now, he is losing in the first round to a player ranked No. 82 in the world. All credit to Phau, who kept his head through a tight match. The two men traded breaks of serve once in each set, but Phau was able to stay mentally tough through both tiebreakers to secure the straight-set victory.
Andreas Beck def. Yen-Hsun Lu 6-4, 6-2
Andreas Beck had a much easier time than his countryman Phau did in his match. Beck breezed past Taipei’s Yen-Hsun Lu in easy straight sets. Lu might have made the match much more competitive, but he did not save one of the 5 break points Beck had against him. For his part, Beck played an impressive second set. He completely dominated Lu with a double service break, and he did not face a single break point in the second set. Beck will play the winner of Thierry Ascione and Adrian Mannarino in the second round.
