The Czech Republic secured a berth in the Davis Cup final on Saturday after taking a 3-0 lead in the tie against host nation Croatia. Radek Stepanek and Tomas Berdych, who came through their respective singles rubbers in five sets on Friday, paired up to earn the deciding point in doubles on Saturday.
Stepanek snagged the first point for the visiting Czech Republic, following his dramatic six-hour victory over Ivo Karlovic. The veteran Czech withstood a record-shattering 78 aces from the Croat to cement a win in five sets, 6-7, 7-6, 7-6, 6-7, 16-14. Compatriot Berdych collected the second point, pocketing a 6-3, 6-3, 4-6, 4-6, 6-3 win against Marin Cilic in nearly four hours of play.
Stepanek and Berdych joined forces in doubles on Saturday, delivering the knockout blow to host nation Croatia in straight sets. The Czech team defeated the combination of Cilic and Zovko in two hours and 16 minutes, 6-1, 6-3, 6-4.
The Czech Republic moves into the Davis Cup final for the third time, having reached the same stage in 1975 and 1980. Czechoslovakia finished runner-up to Sweden in 1975, then prevailed over Italy in 1980.
The winners will travel to Spain to contest the final in early December. Defending champion and host nation Spain dismissed Israel on Saturday.
