Radek Stepanek came through a near six-hour, five-set marathon singles rubber with Ivo Karlovic on Friday. The veteran Czech withstood a record-setting 78 aces from the Croat to take the opening point for his country.
Radek Stepanek fought his way through a five-hour and 59-minute endurance test to defeat Ivo Karlovic in five sets, 6-7, 7-6, 7-6, 6-7, 16-14. The 30-year-old Czech, who dropped serve only once during the match, saved multiple match points at 4-5 and 11-12 in the deciding set.
Stepanek snagged a critical break of the Karlovic serve during the 29th game to pocket a 15-14 advantage. Karlovic set a record with 78 aces on the day, but faltered near the end as he gave away an overhead smash on break point.
Stepanek finished the day with 170 total winners and 50 unforced errors. With the victory, the Czech extends his winning streak to 3-0 over Karlovic, having won their last meeting in 2005.
Marin Cilic faces Tomas Berdych in the second singles rubber of the evening.

I viewed the 'momentaire' this morning and must say, I was a little aghasted by the brightness of their clay. It was too red the scores got muddled up with it's also different couloring of lightish green. Yuk. Karlovic there seemed tired and was not at his greatest, but I was happy with Stepans' performance. His Hawaiian shirt was the only thing interesting about the match. I then had to cruise down to see my brother and family and have returned just, to be viewing their re-match right now. Because as it comes, it seems we only really get to watch the re-run in the second showing. I am hoping for all, an exciting series of the Semis of the Dav',

The 'only' yesterday....It is now our Sunday morning and am viewing the' Doubles' between Czech and Croatia. Stepa is playing but I felt for the Croatian player who received his hardest of 'spikes'. That is how dangerouse and imminently horrifying the doubles can be. . . . Best of luck to the competitors. Always,.

78 aces... that's insane! That equates to about 19.5 free games. And I'm sure there's many more unplayables so figure is most likely higher. That would be a very boring match for spectators.
