Juan Carlos Ferrero cruises past Dudi Sela in straight sets to give Spain a second point in its Davis Cup semifinal tie against Israel. The host Spaniards can clinch the tie with a doubles victory on Saturday.
Juan Carlos Ferrero defeated Dudi Sela 6-4, 6-2, 6-0 in two hours and 27 minutes on Friday afternoon to put Spain one point away from reaching the Davis Cup final for the second straight year. The host Spaniards lead Israel 2-0 after the first two singles rubbers, as David Ferrer beat Harel Levy earlier in the day, also in straight sets.
Ferrero served at 81 percent in the first set and used one break (had 10 break-point opportunities) to take it 6-4. From then on it was even more routine for the 21st-ranked Spaniard. He gave back and early break in the second, but promptly won the last four games of the set. Sela could not recover from that disappointment, and the 5'9'' Israeli failed to win even a single game in the third.
An impressive Ferrero finished with 22 winners against a mere 19 unforced errors; a solid ratio on clay against a tough baseline like Sela. Sela, who registers at 29th in the ATP rankings, struck 31 winners, but also made 38 mistakes.
"At the end I felt pretty good physically and I was playing so much better than in the beginning," explained Ferrero, who is taking the place of injured world No. 2 Rafael Nadal on the Spanish squad. "When I won the first set I started to feel better and better. I'm pretty happy about the match because it's tough to play at home when you have to win."
When asked if the tie was already won, Ferrero said, "Not yet. We need to win one more point."
Spain hopes that point will come tomorrow, when Tommy Robredo and Feliciano Lopez face the Israeli duo of Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram. Lopez's normal doubles partner, Fernando Verdasco, is out with a foot injury. Erlich has been dealing with physical problems of his own this season, and that has contributed to Ram playing full-time on the ATP Tour with Max Mirnyi.

Spain is the top nation in tennis, no doubt about it. They are spoilt for choice, having Nadal is just the cream on the top, but they do very well without it.
