Andy Murray is shrugging off pressure to emulate rival Juan Martin Del Potro by immediately winning a breakthrough Grand Slam after the Argentine led the way last weekend at the US Open.
The scot, currently on Davis Cup duty for Britain in Liverpool against Poland, says he won't be influenced by what his rival might accomplish. After all, the 20-year-old Del Potro is just one of several world class competitors who make up the competition for Murray.
"Other players winning slams doesn't necessarily inspire me", said Murray. "I'm driven with my own goals. That stuff doesn't change the way I feel about my own game".
Murray said he has all manner of rivals to deal with on the ATP. "It's really, really tough to win the Slams now, Del Potro's effort was pretty good", he admitted. "There's no question that Roger (Federer) and Rafa (Nadal) are two of the best ever".
"People say Roger's the best of all time; that's not really up for debate. And Rafa, providing he stays healthy, I'd expect to get to double figures on Slam wins".
Murray is trying to play through the wrist tendinitis which hampered him in New York in his losing match against Croatian Marin Cilic, also involved in Davis Cup this weekend.
"I'll try to get through my matches and see how everything holds up. But I'm capable of playing all three days but if I need to".

I agree posmatrac, the pressure must be on. It's a bit funny that Delpo sort of slipped under the radar and won his first slam while the hype was around other players (and not unjustifiably). I can't see that Murray would be 'inspired' by Delpo. He may as well be inspired by Rafa who's what a year older than him, or Roger who has done amazing things? Why be inspired by Delpo when there is probably still some tension over the 'mother' issue? But he should take a lesson from Delpo like not saying "I'm ready to win my first slam" weeks before the slam starts. Even Rafa at FO said he has to take it one match at a time and not think about the final. What is great though is the increasing competition. The Roger-Rafa rivalry will always be special but more compeition can only be good for the sport and the fans. My wish would be for Nole and Simon to step up but Simon has done very well this year.

do you think that he can play 3 matches 5 setters in 4 days
common! that needs a miracle to happen, that what it takes to win a slam

You tell them, Andy... LOL..
Don't worry, Andy M will surely win a Slam sooner or later. I think he'll win 1 next year. Best shot is at Wimby where the British crowd is even more ferocious that Del Potro's supporters in USO.

i dont think murray will win a slam unless he goes back to how he used to play with his current shot variety ...he is just too defensive and boring .
technically speaking murray's gameplan would work well if people were intimidated by him ( which was the case at certain points of this year) and were to go for more than normal in their shots . that would draw the error . but now ....facing him does not seem like a big deal . and when player play relaxed against him they are going to come to see that all he does is return to the center of the court ....then his opponents will start controlling the points and in turn controlling him and the game .
he needs to used that attacking down the line backhand that we use to talk about in his game ..something which has now disappeared . if andy does not step up his gameplan , he aint gona win a slam ...ever . he has the shot variety ....just lacks the execution .
C'MON !

I respect Murray & wish him the best of luck
My third favourite player after the superb Rafa & the wonderful Djoko

Now in news that Andy M injured his wrist at Cincinatti and could take months to heal. Same as in 2007. Obviously effected match v. Cilic so perhaps people could knock a little less and understand a little more?
smartcuty: thanks for your support, you are my joint favourite poster with trixxyfest, rocketqueen and fan4t. Cannot give you higher compliment!

Murray's playing style is not my favorite (for sure I prefer the old Djoko, not the Djoko we've seen this year, or a Nadal in top form), but I think it'll be really good for tennis that he won a GS. That would give us a Top 5 players with at least 1 GS each, which could be really interesting since winning those tournaments gives an extra confidence dose to the players.

Murray's not yet ready for a Grand Slam, he still does not pose as a Grand slam winner! The attitude is not there, not now anyway.

I love how Andy's respectful towards Roger and Rafa.Good boy!
But I don't agree that his best shot is at Wimbledon, there's too much pressure on him there. It would be better for him if he gets his first Slam in Melbourne or in New York.

Andy Murray has to learn to control his emotions on court and his swearing is not nessesary
He should face a few fines and grow up before a grand slam win in a couple of years

"I love how Andy's respectful towards Roger and Rafa.Good boy!"
he should be respectful to any player not just the top two only, he can start with cilic perhaps (no eye contact at the net after he lost).
sals3, agree with you on the emotion part, that's a big turn off for the fans, he should stop playing the sour scott role already.
also, he should stop believing (reading) british press (biggest culprit in this slamless story) he is as good as roger and rafael and start working on the aggression is his game - his defensive (lot of running) style is good enough for short atp tournies but obviously not good enough for majors - eventually he comes out flat or faces inspired player. but i guess maclagan is paid to tell him all these things. he has the talent, but that sometimes is not enough.

Andy Murray will win the Australian Open! Bring on the pressure!

That's too bad ... Andy's wrist injury. I remember J. Mac talking about Murray having perhaps over trained, and that left him with little energy and focus to pull through the match with Cilic ... but it turns out it was probably the injury that left him in that state.
Poor Blandy ... he hasn't had great luck with the Majors ... but he has kept up his consistency well ... which is why he is number three in the world ... I think he'll get there.

Too bad Djokovic has slid down in performance and ranking since his AO2008 win. I do hope he can turn it around though.
