David Ferrer crushes Harel Levy in the first singles rubber of this weekend's Davis Cup tie between Spain and Israel. The host Spaniards are two points away from a return trip to the final.
David Ferrer rolled over Harel Levy 6-1, 6-4, 6-3 on Friday afternoon to give host Spain a 1-0 lead in its Davis Cup semifinal tie against Israel. Ferrer needed just one hour and 56 minutes to take care of Levy and send a message to the underdog Israelis that Spain is still the team to beat even without injured world No. 2 Rafael Nadal.
Levy, registering at No. 140 in the world rankings, simply could not overcome extremely long odds facing the 19th-ranked Ferrer on clay in front of a Spanish crowd. He served at a dismal 43 percent and that was nowhere near good enough, especially because he won just 34 percent of the points in which he had to toss in a second delivery.
After managing to take only one game in the opening frame of play, Levy began to settle down and he broke Ferrer twice in the second. Nonetheless, his serve continued to fail him and Ferrer returned the favor three times to win the set 6-4. It was all but over and two sets in the clear, Ferrer eased through the third. His second break of the set--and whopping seventh of the match--finished off the proceedings in style.
Ferrer wrapped up his afternoon with 29 winners and 19 unforced errors. An overmatched Levy struck 23 winners and made 33 mistakes. Whereas Levy was just about hopeless on serve, Ferrer put in 65 percent of his first offerings and won more than 70 percent of both his first and second-serve points.
Juan Carlos Ferrero, Nadal's replacement, is attempting to give Spain a 2-0 advantage as he takes on Dudi Sela, Israel's No. 1 player and the No. 29 player in the world.
