US Open quarterfinalist Marin Cilic will take on Tomas Berdych in the second match of Davis Cup semifinals action on Friday. The players are set for their first-career meeting.
(15) Marin Cilic vs. (18) Tomas Berdych
Marin Cilic earned a second point for host nation Croatia during its quarterfinal tie with the United States in July. Aided by a 1-0 lead built by compatriot Ivo Karlovic, the 20-year-old defeated American Mardy Fish after trailing by two-sets-to-one, 4-6, 6-3, 6-7, 6-1, 8-6. Cilic returned to clinch the tie for Croatia, following his victory over James Blake in four sets.
The World No. 15 had faltered this summer, losing early in Washington DC, Montreal and Cincinnati. Cilic made headlines at the US Open, however, scoring the upset of the tournament in the round of 16. The Croat dismissed a listless Andy Murray, who had been tapped as a possible champion, in three sets, 7-5, 6-2, 6-2. Cilic, a title winner in Chennai and Zagreb, bowed out to first-time Grand Slam champion Juan Martin Del Potro in the quarterfinals.
The 18th-ranked Berdych split his two quarterfinal singles rubbers against Argentina. The 23-year-old took out Juan Monaco 6-2 in the fifth set, then fell to Del Potro in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. Berdych finished his weekend 2-1, having teamed with Radek Stepanek to snag a point for the Czech Republic in doubles, besting the Argentine duo of Acasuso and Mayer.
Berydch enjoyed a solid summer season, advancing to the quarterfinals in Washington DC (lost to Isner) and Cincinnati (lost to Nadal). The Czech captured his fifth ATP World Tour title earlier this year in Munich (def. Youzhny).
