Roger Federer has arrived from his US Open final loss in good time to help Switzerland in their Davis Cup World Group relegation tie against Italy starting Friday in Genoa.
The Swiss made the last-minute choice to join teammates Stan Wawrinka, Stephane Bohli and Marco Chiudinelli. Italy will field Andreas Seppi, Simone Bolelli, Fabio Fognini and Potito Starace.
Federer said he had always planned to front up s promised at the tie where the winner returns to the elite grouping for the 2010 edition. Even his five-set loss to Juan Del Potro in New York couldn't change those plans.
"I never had any doubt about coming", said Federer. "The doubts were created by others - certainly not me".
"I obviously need to get over my jet lag, but everything else is fine".
The 15-time Grand Slam winner is still missing a Davis Cup trophy form his massive collection of honours. he nursed a back injury instead of playing in the first-round loss in march to the US. With Federer aboard, the Swiss go into the three-day tie as the favourites, with Seppi the best of the hosts on a 59th ranking.
But Italian captain Corrado Barazzutti is far from discouraged; "This is a unique competition, you can really get motivated for it. There are often strange results in Davis Cup.
"We're not going out on the court already beaten. We're going to give it our best".
