  • Fear in London at the fast rise of Del Potro

    9/17/09 9:26 AM | Johan Lindahl
Fear in London at the fast rise of Del Potro The daggers are suddenly out for Andy Murray after the Scot was overhauled in the race for a potential No. 1 ranking by the surprise US Open title of Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro.

The 20-year-old South American humbled Roger Federer in a five-set final and despite a ranking of fifth has now edged into contention to someday top the ATP table.

Murray, by contrast, lost his grip on No. 2, dropping to third after a fourth-round loss in New York to Marin Cilic.

The British press is now counting on the Scot to haul the nation out of Davis Cup danger in Liverpool in a zonal tie against Poland this weekend.

With Del Potro two years younger than Murray, it's panic stations for the some in London who are desperate for their man to make his Grand Slam title breakthrough.

Comparisons are already being made between Federer - who won his first title at a major on his 17th try at Wimbledon - and Del Potro, who made it on his No. 14. Murray has now gone 16 Slams without a trophy, his closest call a 2008 New York finals loss to Federer.

British media say it's now are never for the 22-year-old, with Rafael Nadal fighting physical problems and Novak Djokovic not the player he was even a season ago.

IF Fedex retired which I think will not be soon because he is almost the least & last to get injured, then the competition on # 1 will be between Nadal 23y (if he can recover from injuries), Delp Potro 21y (if he continues improving), Murray 22y (if he plays more consistently with same high level) & Djokovic 22y (if he improves his fighting spirit & consistency)
I can see any of them ranking 1-4 almost with equal chances to top the table

wow...the brit's are really backing murray to a wall . I am no fan of his but i think it is unfair for a player to be pressured to win .

C'MON !

These are exciting times for tennis. The season of the young guns: Rafa, Nole, AndyM, and Delpo. And the ultimate winner is the true tennis fan who loves competition, and not just counting trophies.

phoenix , 9/17/09 9:56 AM

My Goodness! why can't the young man just play tennis. Why put all that pressure on him.

I bet Muzza didn't know that all of this drama would come with being a tennis player from Britain....Man!

When i think about it it's really sad!

I haven't read anything about them pressuring that girl from Britain(kealong..or something like that)

He probably doesn't even want to play DC...they probably have worried him to death about it.(doesn't his wrist hurt anyway?)

alik , 9/17/09 3:08 PM

Absolutely, and defanitly, Martin has not a thing to worry about. The victtory however at the U S Open deserved of a Champion like him, because himself who was fully incharged of the whereabouts and how to fast-handle each given moment. It would be somewhat appreciative of other players if he could wear bands that do not stand out too much for fear of colour blinding. But I'm certain he'd probable-bably wear out some V-necks for a change to boost the respectability.. I'm of course sure that we are bound to see alot more of Juan Potro in the next five or six years with things sliding through nicely, but that is how it can really be. Just Truth and Freedom.. No More, No Less. Pure is the art of X-tianity / Christianity, as I am a Uniting Member. Because it will hurt if we didn't follow the rightest path, but then how we take such a thing, is to take it lightly,. (Trust me: I know what I'm doing)

Well, England is reaching the point of desperation in many aspects but its unfair to Murray. Truthfully he could win a major or 2 sometime in his career if everything goes his way, but as long as everyone else stays healthy he will never be the #1 guy.

alik, believe me, Murray is well aware of the overdrive in GB regarding their sports stars. They all get the same treatment, footballers, cricketers, atheletes. They enjoy building them up and enjoy even more knocking them down. Murray has done his best not to get caught up in it, but it's not easy.

He had to think positive going into the USO, and tell himself he could win it , otherwise what's the point of competing. But the media here really puts their stars on the spot, and drops them if they don't make it.

When he got the No 2 ranking, I distinctly remember him saying in an interview that he only got it because Rafa was injured, and that he would like to have it on a more permanent basis and not just for a few weeks, but subsequently, they kept pushing and pushing about him being No1 by the end of the year, and he had to go along with it.

Federer needed 17 attemps to win his first GS?? Uh, that's interesting. Never knew about that statistic before, always thought it took him less time giving the amount he already has.

How old was he when he first won Wimbledon? Anybody knows?

alba , 9/17/09 5:21 PM

Simply Murray is the hope for his country!!!!!!!!
Even though I am not from GB but I can understand the British fans point of view
GB is hungry for sports achievemnt especially in Tennis as they think their records in sports in general & in Tennis in specific doesn't match up with being a great nation invented so many games & were leaders in many aspects before
Having said that I really pitty Murray to carry the hopes of a nation on his arm & racket, the guy is talented but the pressure can collapse him even though he has many to give in the coming years if he performed & improved the way he did last 2 years
Good luck for Murray & for every single sweating player who earns his credit by his sweat & hard work

smartcuty , 9/17/09 6:23 PM

well, i'm british, and i don't know anyone who cares either way about whether murray wins a slam or not

Sib69 , 9/17/09 7:03 PM

alba, I think it was just before he turned 22 - wimb 2003 was his first, so just have to count back. he was born in august '81 if i'm not wrong.

yeah fed took a while to break through the slams. i watched him for few years before he won his first slam. you could see he had the talent but couldn't quite break through. than of course he did and his ego magnified and the rest as they say is history...

carrie, remember the book we talked about a week or two ago. i recommend you read the on-line reviews first. it's well written but you may not want to stomach certain things, don't know. but here's another snippet for you towards the end:

"Over the years, Federer had developed a ritual. In the hours after winning a Major title, he would spark up his computer, read the glowing accounts, see the triumphant photos, and watch the highlights on Youtube"....
..On this night, he would have no use for his computer, no interest in watching clips of Nadal holding up the trophy. (It's something I don't ever want to see," Federer said two months later).

interesting, no, carrie?

homos , 9/17/09 7:16 PM

homos, very interesting. I trusted you and ordered it from Anazon, but I am still waiting for it to be delivered. I am currectly reading Serena's.

The man is a narcicist. When people say how he loves talking to the press, bla, bla bla, I just think of course he does, they are continually preening his feathers, but when the press started doubting him in 2007/8, he wasn't so keen on talking to them then.

To be fair, Roger can't help himself. He is a typical Leo, they do believe they are king of the jungle and are only happy when they are king of all they survey, I am married to one.

carrie , 9/17/09 7:30 PM

Yeah, thank you, Homos, I admit I was too lazzy to do some research but I did in the end Lol

I wish I had seen Federer playing when he had potential but wasn't the legend he is now. Unfortunately, I didn't. Wasn't a big fan of tennis then.

"To be fair, Roger can't help himself. He is a typical Leo, they do believe they are king of the jungle and are only happy when they are king of all they survey, I am married to one."

Carrie, that was completely hilarious! I couldn't agree more with you. Federer looks a little bit paid of himself and he cannot hide it, though, well... most champions are, aren't they?

alba , 9/17/09 8:41 PM

carrie, no fear, i think you will enjoy it but i will stop sending you excerpts than. there are other interesting ones :) it's well written no doubt, better than others i've read. be aware the the aim was initially to write a bk on fed but after the match, the aim changed. but the writer never really stepped away from his initially plan. still, there are some useful things in there (like abt the umpire) to learn imo. read it with an open mind and try to enjoy the information. how is serena's?

alba, happy to help :) so are you going to get it? :)

homos , 9/18/09 7:14 AM

Serena's is very open and frank. I am only a qtr of the way through it because I can't help watching recordings of Rafa's matches, even those that he lost just to see where he's at right now.

I was put off by the cover of Strokes of Genius, with a large figure of Roger looming over a miniature Rafa. Rafa is writing his autobiography at the moment, he says the biography about him on the market at the moment is unauthorised.

carrie , 9/18/09 9:52 AM

i know what you mean, you can remove the cover when it arrives lol! yeah, a lot of fans are waiting for his biography. the one by oldfield is not official i know. i have read it and it has received bad reviews and low ratings, i think similar to a book on roger (quest for perfection, which i haven't and won't be reading but i read the reviews), just a compiled heap of reports. rafa was never interviewed for that bk and there is nothing about him personally or his game, growing up, etc, just all of his matches and the scores. waste of time. but even though it's bad, i sometimes like to find out how bad :) don't buy that one. you know more than what the bk provides.
