  • Nadal hopes to find solution to his abdominal muscle problem

    9/14/09 7:42 PM | Johan Lindahl
Nadal hopes to find solution to his abdominal muscle problem Rafael Nadal left New York for medical tests at home in Spain to determine the extent of the abdominal muscle problem which has bothered him for a month.

The Spaniard who returns to second in the world next week revealed after losing his US Open semi-final 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 to Juan Del Potro that pain from the problem has gotten worse.

But after deciding to play through the Open no matter what, the six-time Grand Slam champion will now take the time to see what is actually wrong.

"I have to see the doctor in Spain and do another test, because I didn't want to do a test during the tournament because anyway I gonna play. So I don't know how is the injury right now, but I expect not a lot".

Nadal withdrew from Spain's Davis Cup semi-final next week in Murcia on clay against Israel but is due to play for the first time at the Bangkok Open starting in a fortnight.

The Spaniard said he picked up the problem a month ago in Montreal, where he returned aft two months out resting tendinitis-plagued knees.

"I after the match of (German Philipp) Petzschner, second round", he explained. "I preferred not to speak about the injury during the week because I was in the tournament".

"After Montreal, I did a test. The doctor didn't see a lot, but the pain is still there. In Cincinnati, the pain increased a little bit more. After the semifinals against (Novak) Djokovic, I went to do an MRI, and I had some edema, strained muscle".

"I think during these two weeks the strain is converted into a little bit of rupture".

My stepfather had to hand in his job as he collapsed from abdominal problems before taking up a chauffeuring career. I realised Raf's pain must be increasing towards the end of his time in the comptn. The knees proved stable. Now the abdomen could be just a cause of mere worry from trying to keep a steady level so soon after the long rest. He is used to dominating, and procuring great results often that he requires to go back to choosing how often he could play. As the sport acquires alot of muscle control to hit the right points, his brain might be experiencing a relapse from the happenings of the previous months, and is adjusting slightly. There is nothing wrong anyhow about starting back slowly but nonetheless, a player alone needs to be absolutely, and happy on how they face the future in means of the right approaches. If it should take time, then he can gamble around it without pressure whilst still young. Like mentioned before, everything happens for a type of reason sometimes no matter deep. Welcome back Rafa, we might hear from you soon. Take very good care out there;..

Rafa's blog:

Loss to Del Potro will help me improve my game

Rafaelnadalap

Hello and goodbye to all,

It has been great being able to be with you all these past two weeks. In the end I left NY on the final Sunday but unfortunately it was not after playing the final. The semi-final match was not the best I've played and that loss will help me think about some things and hopefully keep improving. I wasn't really there yesterday. The other guy simply played much better than me and I feel I am not playing at that level needed to win a major.

Lots of people asked me about my injury and also if that affected my game. The truth is that I didn't play well and there is no excuse whatsoever for the defeat. He played better and deserved to win. Now I am flying back home and also would like to get my abdominal muscle checked. It doesn't look too good since I am in pain when serving but hopefully it is nothing serious.

I didn't want to talk about the injury during the US Open. There were several reasons for that: 1) I didn't want to give any extra information to my rivals. In the end I am playing, I knew I was going to go out and compete and there was no reason why to say I'm injured. 2) for respect to my opponent. I wouldn't feel too good if someone who says publicly that he is injured beats me and 3) I didn't really want to stop and wanted to play no matter what. I didn't want it to be checked after I did the last one a week before the tournament started.

Now I am back and will do everything to get it checked.

Once again many thanks for this opportunity of writing the blog and I hope to be back with you all soon.

Rafa

Dear fan4t: am sure you will read this thread so just popped back to wish you all best and Rafa a speedy recovery. Too much hostility to Andy M for me to linger here, but will pop back now and again. I see maximalt is still posting, does she not realise that you can change your name and assume a false identity, but unless you are james joyce it is v. difficult to adopt a different style of writing? Anyway, may the future bring only good times for Andy and Rafa! Bye.

deuce , 9/15/09 8:09 PM

Hi deuce!!! Great to hear from you! So sorry about Murray but I have no doubt he is still a top player and will get his GS! Is going to be kind of slow newswise for the rest of the year compared to before--lol.

Is perfect time for Rafa to deal with his ab problem. I am proud he didn't retire and played the best he could. Delpo was great and he proved it again yesterday! Was a great match to watch. Hope to talk to you soon and share some snacks again!

fan4tennis , 9/15/09 8:21 PM

fan4t: u are a star and a true tennis buddy, you are tempting me back alright! I was very upset to see Rafa in pain and so unlike himself. Yes, it's a good time for him to rest. Think Andy might need a new coach! Bye.

deuce , 9/15/09 9:35 PM

Carrie, you're a hoot! Post of the day. But I hope you mean WATCHING ballet, because those leading men need fully functioning abs to lift the prima ballerinas, too.

Now he gets to prioritise more enforced rest and it won't be too long after that until season's end - should see him in top nick for AO 10, and that must be a key priority as it is the only slam cup in the Nadal cabinet just now.

deuce, the Andy M coach issue intrigues me. He disappointed in the hard courts slams this year, but reached new highs at RG and Wimbledon. I know there was some belly-aching after his A-Rod semi loss at SW19 but, really, it was nip and tuck and he did awfully well, I felt. So it's really just one bad day at the office last week that has the media vultures now circling around his coterie, if you ask me. He shouldn't allow himself to get too comfy, for sure - but that in itself is no reason to throw them all out just yet!

gorafago , 9/16/09 12:59 AM

WELCOME BACK KOTTER ! Thou, the great man Rafa!! Ha ha. How lucky is such a wonderful opportunity to view the blog. I wonder however if that was your first semis in the States Open itself.. Greater of achievements. Juansey Del Potr is only beginning to receive the hang of things. Bravado. I do not and never will know how it feels to be in such fine shoes, but times are changing and a secure rest and plenty of getting in touch with Nature is wonder to remedy heavy difficulties, plus creating a happy atmosphere and play some tunes, y'know..... All the best my mann,..

steppo , 9/16/09 2:06 AM

True gorafago, and carrie maybe you've never been a dancer but try to balance on tip toe on one leg without using ALL of your abdominal muscles ... cannot be done. LOL
Perhaps Rafa could try scrabble ... in other languages ... like French, so the Parisians will be nicer to him next time, or English ... just to practice (for his acceptance speeches at Wim and AO etc ...). Anyway ... speedy recovery Nadal.

smr , 9/16/09 2:52 AM

gorafago, smr and carrie, you guys are being very naughty!!! behave :)

homos , 9/16/09 4:27 AM

gorafago: true, true but all agree, and me too, that he needs to "destroy not toy" when he plays. So many times have I seen him return yet one more ball that he should've killed. He's got the talent so why doesn't he use it? He always loses against the "big hitters". He's gotta match them. Are his team telling him that?

deuce , 9/17/09 9:40 PM

I just think Rafa should develop a beautiful game and glide across the court, but not in a tutu.

I read somewhere that the sleeveless shirt is coming back after the FO 2010. Somehow I have got to like his current look, he just looks great in anything really. If they bring back the sleeveless shirt it's got to be with the capri pants.

VAMOS RAFA!

carrie , 9/17/09 9:58 PM

is it bad that i wanna see rafa play tennis in a tutu? :P

ok... don't answer that, haha

Sib69 , 9/17/09 10:09 PM

Rafa test on his knees came back and his knees are totally fine!

Still waiting on report of how long before the abs will be healed but ..

it was reported in the Bangkok Times that he confirmed to be in Thailand on the 23 of sept. leave there ..go on vaction then play tourney on 29th so....

alik , 9/18/09 12:36 AM

i hope rafa dsnt play thailand........he shud rest before playing shanghai masters....he has made a lot mistakes this year regarding his tournaments....

but then he shudnt have played rotterdam or madrid either........so i wont be surprised if he goes to thailand!

vrael , 9/18/09 12:55 PM

Sibb, though Rafa looks great in anything I think the tutu will be going a little too far, but I can see him in a leotard. Could you imagine Rafa playing tennis in a leotard, it might help to cure his 'habit', because I don't think he'll be able to tug at it.

I hope Nike is picking up on these ideas.
