  • Federer faces Del Potro in U.S. Open final

    9/14/09 8:54 AM | Ricky Dimon
Federer faces Del Potro in U.S. Open final Roger Federer and Juan Martin Del Potro will battle for the 2009 U.S. Open title on Monday afternoon. Federer seeks his sixth straight triumph in New York, while Del Potro is looking for his first career Grand Slam.

Roger Federer is going for his third Grand Slam of the year, 16th slam of his career, and sixth straight U.S. Open on Monday afternoon. And for the third consecutive major final of 2009, Rafael Nadal is not in his way.

Instead, Federer will take on fast-rising star Juan Martin Del Potro in the U.S. Open final. The two players have met on six previous occasions, and Federer has prevailed every single time. He has defeated Del Potro three times this season; in the Australian Open quarterfinals, the Masters Series Madrid Semifinals, and most recently--in their most competitive clash--in the semifinals of the French Open (3-6, 7-6(2), 2-6, 6-1, 6-4).

Given his current form, Del Potro seems poised to give Federer a similar test on Monday. For the second year in-a-row, the 20-year-old Argentine is enjoying an out-of-this-world summer. After his performance at Roland Garros, he went out early at Wimbledon (on his least favorite surface), but successfully defended his Washington title and finished runner-up to Andy Murray in Montreal. So far in New York, Del Potro has taken out Juan Monaco, Jurgen Melzer, Daniel Koellerer, Juan Carlos Ferrero, Marin Cilic, and Rafael Nadal, dropping one set to both Koellerer and Cilic. The world No. 6 put on a devastating display against Nadal, blasting the No. 3 seed off the court in 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 fashion.

Unfortunately for Del Potro, there is one--and only one--player on the ATP Tour who is playing better tennis right now, and that player happens to be his opponent in the biggest match of his life. After a slow start to the season, Federer captured his first French Open title and his sixth Wimbledon crown. The top-ranked Swiss went on to win the Cincinnati title and he has been dominant throughout this fortnight. Federer has dismissed Devin Britton, Simon Greul, Lleyton Hewitt, Tommy Robredo, Robin Soderling, and Novak Djokovic, losing sets only to Hewitt and Soderling.

A literal wild card, Kim Clijsters, won the women's title on Sunday, and Del Potro is a figurative wild card on Monday. It's all but a given what we will get from Federer, who is in near-flawless form and is no stranger--to say the least--to Grand Slam finals. The question is, "What will we get from Del Potro?" He completely melted down in a 6-3, 6-0, 6-0 humiliation at the hands of Federer in Australia, and he gave away a 2-1 set lead to the Swiss in Paris. Del Potro's huge win over Nadal on Sunday proves that he can handle latter stages of a Grand Slam, but a final is a whole different ballgame. If Del Potro gets off to slow start, this could very easily turn into a blowout.

Don't forget, however, the 2000 and 2001 U.S. Open finals in which young upstarts (Marat Safin in 2000 and Lleyton Hewitt in 2001) dismantled a heavily-favored veteran (Pete Sampras). Something similar to those results is possible, but extremely unlikely. Federer has far more dimensions to his game than Sampras and, if necessary, he can hit his way out of trouble if his serve breaks down. It would take an inexplicable dip in Federer's game in order for Del Potro to win this comfortably. Del Potro's only real hope is to stay competitive as long as possible and build up confidence as the match progresses.

Under less pressure-packed circumstances, this matchup would be close to a toss-up. In a Grand Slam final, however, look for Federer to roll to yet another title, losing one set at most along the way.

would not be surprised at Federer 6-3, 6-2, 6-4

but I'll be nice to DP: Federer 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-3, 6-2

tomnjerry2 , 9/14/09 9:21 AM

Federites ..the FedExpress has checked in to YET ANOTHER GS semifinal .
He was awesome in the semi's . That shot to set up match point was ridiculous ....a winner ..

I reckon JMDP is gona bring it ! he has nothin to loose ...but the only problem he is going to face is that he wont be attacking as much as he would want to as he will be facing the top gun when it comes to hammering winners in the court .

I expect a very exciting match ...attacking tennis ...the way the game is meant to be played ...

Federites UNITE ...

C'MON !!
USO09 ..where we celebrate our sweet 16th !

fedexfan , 9/14/09 2:35 PM

The new generation is going the physical approach.

I dont think any coach can train someone to have the feel and magic shots of Roger.

But to have fitness near to nadal's fitness is very much possible. And hitting powerful shot is a matter of pounding in the muscles.

A survey shows that the players are getting bigger and bigger.

LOL

GO FED GO!!!

torres9 , 9/14/09 2:56 PM

Hey, Ricky. I'm starting to buy the DelPo-has-a-real-shot-at-the-Open analysis. ;-)

I have to admit, I didn't think DelPo had the wind to get through two weeks of five setters, but then DelPo hasn't needed to even go five sets once as he's blitzed through everyone. A tip of the cap, Ricky. You called this one.

SenorPlaid , 9/14/09 3:12 PM

Ok, I'm going to surprise even myself while/with writing these lines: I am both a Federer and Delpo fan, making this final somewhat of an understandable dilemma; but I think I would like Delpo to prevail (if he plays his great game); it would be good for tennis and Federer *smrc* can easily get this one next year.. Come on gentle and robust giant, go for it! All in all, this final is going to be a tennis treat for us fans!

Sanela , 9/14/09 3:26 PM

the FED is HOT, HOT, HOT, right N O W!!! LOL He is the Gladiator (hero/god) full of magical tricks and with the skills of the "unexplainable" to boot. Coming forth to your TV sets soon... LIVE from New York! LOL :) I like Del Potro... but against the FED?! The buck stops here! The FED is the hammer! C'MON!

sky , 9/14/09 3:48 PM

I hear you Sanela. I was rooting for Roddick at Wimbledon for the same reasons, but I wasn't unhappy in the end.

SenorPlaid , 9/14/09 3:50 PM

I expect it will be a FANTASTIC match! Hoping the best from both players... :)

sky , 9/14/09 4:15 PM

well, have waited all day to logon to TT today - said "link broken, server down". frustrating. THE SHOT. can you believe it federer fans?! 28 years ago, God made the perfect tennis player - THAT was and is -unbelievable -

Fed holds and away we go ...

SenorPlaid , 9/14/09 10:21 PM

c'mon federer. go:roger:go! phew!

maxi , 9/14/09 10:23 PM

wow! oh my god. what a shot!

maxi , 9/14/09 10:31 PM

Nice save by the kid, but was he only staving off the inevitable?

SenorPlaid , 9/14/09 10:57 PM

Yup, 6-3 in the first.

SenorPlaid , 9/14/09 10:59 PM

I would like Delpo to at the very least give Fed a good hard 5 set workout... but with the way things are going, it may end up in a straight sets rout.

cable , 9/14/09 11:17 PM

great match so far. flippin' skysports loss of pictures tho'! Argh!!!!!!! federer got to get that first serve in tho' - still finding the rhythm on the first serve! cmon federer! DO IT FOR THE TWINS!

maxi , 9/14/09 11:24 PM

maxi, it's not a great match at all if you are at all a tennis fan. But you are an all out Fed fan and would be happy with the result. I'm not unhappy, just want to see a more tighter match with tension. I don't mind Federer winning, just want him to work for it rather than an easy straight set victory stroll to his 16.

IMO Federer dominating the GS is not good for the sport. There will be a big let down when he's not there anymore. Men's tennis needs to make a transition towards the new generation.

cable , 9/14/09 11:49 PM

Dang! That was huge! No way DelPo comes back from two sets down. We got a match now. For those watching on the tube, has DelPo's game improved or did Fed's just take an absolute hike on him (as it appeared via Slamtracker) in that second set?

SenorPlaid , 9/15/09 12:09 AM

One set all! SP, Delpo's level went up. He found his confidence again (his face looked dejected at one time) and the crowd is cheering him on. He's going for his shots more now. Fed let a challenge that didn't go his way stay with him (they kept showing him muttering to himself) and his serve is off. Delpo is finding his serve finally.

fan4tennis , 9/15/09 12:15 AM

Federer's first-serve % is DISMAL. Way to choose a time to serve like crap, Fed.

jyannis , 9/15/09 12:26 AM

My, Oh my, Oh my, Federer is swearing and arguing with the umpire.

carrie , 9/15/09 12:46 AM

that was bad, carrie...i mean, strange

zoey234 , 9/15/09 12:50 AM

Wow, that was a turnaround. Down a break, Fed breaks right back and breaks again for the set. That would be a crusher under ordinary circumstances. Now, we'll see what the kid really is made of.

SenorPlaid , 9/15/09 12:50 AM

He had a valid point (too long to challenge) but he didn't need to swear. Sounded like he got more upset that the chair umpire told him to be quiet. Was nowhere near what Serena did! Looks like Delpo may have lost all his confidence after 2 DF's that gave fed the third set. He looks dejected again.

fan4tennis , 9/15/09 12:52 AM

I think Federer should get a fine for foul language and a point penalty.

carrie , 9/15/09 12:55 AM

fft, to answer your question about who i am for: i am weirly divided almost 50 -50. first time since i started watching federer.

zoey234 , 9/15/09 12:56 AM

Don't think it will be good for Roger to lose his head like this. Will have implications on the match, let's see how this plays out...andddd he failed to convert two break points. Way to go man. Keep your head together...a Serena or a Safina is not desirable, kthxbai.

jyannis , 9/15/09 12:57 AM

'weirdly' strangely divided.

zoey234 , 9/15/09 12:58 AM

hello carrie, i couldn't resist! i wonder if serena saw mr. class act verbally abuse the chair umpire. one common truth in life is, "who you really are will show sooner or later!" mark my words carrie, everybody is going to act as if it's nothing or they didn't see it! what makes it so funny is that roger just talked about how serena should have known better! watch how all the writers, commentators, media, etc. sweep it under the rug! i'm still in shock, not roger federer; he's perfect angel!

memi , 9/15/09 12:58 AM

Federer should at least have had a warning.

carrie , 9/15/09 1:00 AM

Geez, come on people! fed was ticked that the chair ump gave Delpo so much time to decide to challenge (and he had a valid point) cuz there was possibility that Delpo waited til his coaches told him he should challenge. He said 2 cuss words ("I don't give a shoot" and can't remember the other), did not threaten harm on the umpire and was asking why there are rules if they aren't used.

fan4tennis , 9/15/09 1:04 AM

Actually, memi he did it at Wimbledon 2007 against Nadal when a close call was found to be good by hawkeye, and he let rip sitting right under the umpire's chair, using the 'f' word. The thing is, it's easy to be calm and nice when everything is going your way, but as soon as things are against you you show your true colours.

If they don't punish him like they've done Serena, then I think Serena has a right to protest.

carrie , 9/15/09 1:06 AM

lol..

zoey234 , 9/15/09 1:07 AM

you cannot compare threatening to shove a ball down a linespersons throat to what fed said.

fan4tennis , 9/15/09 1:09 AM

carrie, are you kidding me! a warning! give roger federer a warning! why would they? he owns them all. i'm eager to see how cherylmurray will approach this topic; i'm sure she's writing down some good reasons as we speak! quite honestly, it's not all that surprising to me, i've always known how he is! he disguises it well! you see how quick they took the camera off him and went to a commercial! maybe, they will replay it all night long like they did serena so we can actually hear what was said. you think!

memi , 9/15/09 1:10 AM

They showed the whole thing here memi.

fan4tennis , 9/15/09 1:11 AM

Memi, we saw it all in England, word for word, and it was ugly.

f4t, they had no idea what Serena said to the line judge, they just knew that she'd had an outburst. Infact they still don't know what she said. I wholeheartedly think she deserves her punishment, but so should everyone.

carrie , 9/15/09 1:15 AM

my cbs affiliate went to commercial, fft. i only heard the s bomb but mary carrillo said he swore twice. he should get a fine or something. could cost him this set, which for him is worse. and the crowd sounds behind delpo.

zoey234 , 9/15/09 1:16 AM

carrie, I heard enough f bombs out of Serena in her outburst to curl anyone's toes. In all the replays too, you can't tell what she even said anymore because they have so many bleeps used. So if they (TV people) know enough to bleep alot of words, you're saying that the judges STILL don't know what she said?

fan4tennis , 9/15/09 1:22 AM

OK f4t Federer is a saint.

carrie , 9/15/09 1:23 AM

zoey234, if you buy anything mary carillo says regarding federer when she worships him, get real! cost roger a set, please! roger will never get punished for anything he does and we all know it! carillo can stop with the phony act! like i always say, the men's tour is a roger federer promotion and he knows it! that's why nadal does what he has to do, win or lose, and he goes home because he knows it's all about roger!

memi , 9/15/09 1:24 AM

yeah, why are you defending RF, fft?

i was laughing cos to me it was so weird and out of character for him in a gs, it made me think of a little boy throwing a tantrum. i was leaning toward cheering for delpo anyway.

zoey234 , 9/15/09 1:26 AM

Who is to say threatening to shove the ball down someone's thoat is worse than saying four letter words in full view of the camera to the umpire.

carrie , 9/15/09 1:28 AM

I'm sorry if I think you are being too harsh about it. EVERYONE knows I dislike fed so for me to defend him, should say something about the topic! None of fed's words were threatening the ump. Carillo and company even brought up about the possibility of Delpo being told by his camp to challenge which Carillo said is flat out cheating and that's what fed was mad about.

fan4tennis , 9/15/09 1:32 AM

memi, i agree that carillo worships roger but not the other stuff you say. however it's your opinion, i accept that.

can roger spare a trophy for delpo?

zoey234 , 9/15/09 1:34 AM

I think Federer is cross because Delpo has not handed it to him on a plate.

F4T, You don't only get punished for threatening language, you also get punished for bad language. If Federer though Delpo was cheating, he should have complained to the umpire about that.

carrie , 9/15/09 1:39 AM

carrie, fan4tennis has a right to her opinion. it just not in sink with ours! where i come from, "what's good for the goose is good for the gander."

memi , 9/15/09 1:39 AM

heard roger swearing at the umpire too... ugly scene. he was clearly irritated... but that's no excuse. don't know what to think now.

kazuo , 9/15/09 1:42 AM

carrie, where are all the fedfans? they can comment immediately on everything else! i guess none of them saw it, if you know what i mean!

memi , 9/15/09 1:44 AM

memi, you'd think Fedfans would all be defending their god now.

Oh, Oh, another argument.

carrie , 9/15/09 1:47 AM

Call the referee.

carrie , 9/15/09 1:48 AM

i am a fedfan, memi. always will love his tennis but ...i don't like his cranky attitude today.

zoey234 , 9/15/09 1:50 AM

zoey, am defending because there were some really nice and fair fedfans who defended the Rafa fans against fellow fedfans after his loss yesterday. Plus, I don't think what he did is any different from a Roddick outburst, or words that others complain all the time about Murray saying. Many times, what Roddick has said is 10 times worse than today. No warnings given. Murray cusses on court....no warnings given. How many other cuss words are said in other languages.....no warnings given. All of the sudden, it should happen to fed when it hasn't happened to the others??

fan4tennis , 9/15/09 1:51 AM

zoey, you should be overdosing on Zantac right now I bet--lol!

fan4tennis , 9/15/09 1:58 AM

So maybe Serena should not have been punished then.

carrie , 9/15/09 1:58 AM

true, fft. muzz drops f-bombs but you probably would cringe if rafa behaved like roger just did in a gs final. i was maybe 40% hoping delpo would win his first gs and now i am like 50-50 and off the rollercoaster...i even laughed at how absurd it looked for RF to show that side.

the last gs was so close, coulda gone to roddick. RF is gonna lose this crown eventually or.....today. just reality.

zoey234 , 9/15/09 1:58 AM

Yes....WELCOME, to you, the great site and everyone......
I can c there can be a five set, o' wait.....there is!!! HA HA HA.....
The worst possibles of scenarios - crucial can cruels in eye of the beholder. But, when that happens, we fight until, and until the end..... Dat's it from me for this article. Tah guys ,.

TAFARIANA , 9/15/09 2:01 AM

Difference is that Serena threatened a person!

Rafa probably has cussed too,but I don't understand Spanish--lol. They are saying if Delpo can do this, he will be the FIRST person to have beaten Rafa AND Fed to do it!

fan4tennis , 9/15/09 2:07 AM

maxi, do you still think it's a great match?

carrie , 9/15/09 2:07 AM

I think it's become a great match. Nail biting.

carrie , 9/15/09 2:11 AM

serena should definitely be punished... it was her aggressive behaviour towards the line person that is unacceptable... if she just swore maybe today there wouldn't that much to say ab her match against kim.

kazuo , 9/15/09 2:11 AM

Point taken, kazuo.

carrie , 9/15/09 2:13 AM

fft, RF is going to lose and the thought of that does make me sort of sad. but all kudos to delpo. he hung in and yes, accomplished besting both rafa and roger! think how happy delpo will be and think how muzza is gonna feel, lol... when watching delpo beat rafa, i felt he could win.

so i will say so long for now, okay. logging off....don't want to watch the ending

zoey234 , 9/15/09 2:14 AM

Delpo= new tennis superstar. Funny that he is the one who ends Fed's run at USO before Nadal, Djoker, Murray(especially)....

New star is born (quietly)...

torres9 , 9/15/09 2:14 AM

Damn. You go away for a few minutes (commute), and look what happens. Did anyone think Fed could lose TWO tiebreakers at a Slam?

SenorPlaid , 9/15/09 2:19 AM

torres, a new ship is passing by and you are jumping onto it.

carrie , 9/15/09 2:21 AM

Congrats to Delpo...well played! I said it from the start that record-breaking and 6-in-a-row is jinxed and I don't think Fed could do it, and I am going to proven right. Still a abysmal 5th set from Roger and a fantastic one from Delpo. The better player will win. :)

jyannis , 9/15/09 2:23 AM

del potro well deserved!

kazuo , 9/15/09 2:26 AM

Magic!

carrie , 9/15/09 2:27 AM

the FED was just not "ON" tonight... Del Potro was shining at the right moments, and was able to pull off some fantastic strong forehand shots! Congratulations to Del Potro and his fans! Del Potro is a good guy! Hope to see him win many more...

sky , 9/15/09 2:27 AM

good stuff delpo, good stuff, i'm glad you did it. too bad it wasn't murray :)

posmatrac , 9/15/09 2:31 AM

Hey, Rickey. I'm starting to think you might be right about this Del Potro guy having a chance to contend for the Open title this year ... ;-)

OK, let's try to put this upset into proper perspective.

The number of times Federer had won in a row to someone ranked lower than No. 5 at a Slam since losing to Gustavo Kuerten at the 2004 French Open -- 149.

The number of times someone has beaten both Nadal and Federer at a Slam -- 1.

Unbelievable, and now we know about Del Potro: DP tene huevos grandes!

SenorPlaid , 9/15/09 2:31 AM

God loves justice! nadal was undermined at the french so that he wouldn't make history, now, look how God works, del potro was the one to do it! he played something incredible; he showed guts; that's what i admire in a player. he deserves it all! always remember, what goes around comes around; we reap what we sow!

memi , 9/15/09 2:34 AM

What, no crying?

carrie , 9/15/09 2:35 AM

Kinda refreshing that someone else win other than Fed and Nadal.

Positive thing is that it's still a good year for Fed but slipped at the last step. Well. At least we'll get to see how Fed responds again.

Wow. Delpo is probably the 1st man to beat Rafa and Fed at a Slam and also he does it earlier than Muzza.

How ironic. Props.

torres9 , 9/15/09 2:37 AM

I have got to print this one out -: JUAN MARTIN DEL POTRO TRIUMPHS AT THE 2009 UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS OPEN. HIS FIRST EVER GRAND SLAM THROUGH HIS FIRST FINAL-SEMI DEFEATING RIVAL R NADAL AND PAST DEFENDING CHAMPION R FEDERER WHO HOLDS FIVE WINS OF TOTAL. CONGRATULATIONS JUAN M DEL POTRO !!

steppo , 9/15/09 2:42 AM

haha carrie... we can't have 2 men crying... no no... it's del potro's turn to cry this time.

kazuo , 9/15/09 2:43 AM

it's the Brave New World in men's tennis.

no crying for fed, no crying for fed.

Congratulations Juan Martin del Potro

sad, that old guy (dick enburg?) did not let him have more time to thank his fans in spanish. that was rude. kim was given time to thank everyone in 3 languages.

zoey234 , 9/15/09 2:44 AM

this is the person that gets the sportsmanship award.

No he didn't cry but when he spoke was all about.. I had a good tournament.
I have already won 5 times.

alik , 9/15/09 3:09 AM

Whateva alik, Fed still did better than Nadal in the USO.

torres9 , 9/15/09 3:28 AM

torres: what's rafa got to do with this? fed only went one round further than rafa. rafa equalled his best showing at uso 09 by reaching semis. federer didn't equal his

Sib69 , 9/15/09 3:40 AM

Yada yada yada, only player with a better showing than Fed in this year's USO is Delpo.

torres9 , 9/15/09 3:57 AM

i'm sorry torres, you can go to sleep now. nothing you say matters! all that matters to me is that justice was done and what i've always believed is confirmed once more, that in the end wrong will never defeat right. what soderling did to nadal at the french on his favorite surface, del potro did to federer today on his favorite surface! how poetic!

memi , 9/15/09 4:18 AM

???? LOL... Justice is already done when Fed won 15th Slam

torres9 , 9/15/09 4:43 AM

Justice would also be even more poetic if Delpo beat Fed in the semis and Rafa winning against Delpo in the final. But not only did Delpo slayed Roger of 16th Slam, he also slayed Rafa of the career Slam and also his 7th Slam.

So I think the only wants who's enjoying the sweetness of justice is Mr. Del Po

torres9 , 9/15/09 5:07 AM

Unlike you torres, I'm not in the mood to badmouth and denigrate other players just because your player did not win.

Delpo winning made me cry! Watching him so happy was endearing and he earned every single moment of it! I said yesterday, that if he played like he did against Rafa, then whoever he faced was in trouble. It took him a bit to settle down, but he started playing like yesterday. As JMac said, you could see in Delpo's face that he started to believe! Fed was no slouch either. He played a great game and had some great shots. His serve just wasn't on today and Delpo found his. It was a great match to watch! I wish I knew what Delpo said in Spanish cuz he got very emotional saying it. I agree that Dick Enberg was rude as heck to try to deny the winner that right. He kept saying we don't have time but kept going with other stuff (and was enough time for Delpo to ask him TWICE to do it).

Thanks Ricky for setting the record straight for people that Delpo has done great this summer. Didn't Enberg say he won extra money for winning the USO Open series of tourneys?

Sorry to the fedfans. I know you are disappointed but your guy still played a great match! Now London awaits for many of us fans!

fan4tennis , 9/15/09 6:04 AM

he won extra $250,000 for being 3rd in the uso series

homos , 9/15/09 6:19 AM
