No. 4 seed Novak Djokovic will face his toughest test yet in the form of world No. 10 Fernando Verdasco. The two men will fight for a spot in the semifinals.
Serbia’s Novak Djokovic holds a slight career edge over Fernando Verdasco at 3 wins to 2. The good news for the Serb is that he won the last 3 of their 5 matches, including a victory this year on the clay courts of Monte Carlo.
Djokovic is enjoying the better form at the moment. The Serb had a particularly impressive win over Radek Stepanek in the round of 16. Djokovic’s big struggle surprisingly came from No. 276 Jesse Witten in the third round, but he seems to have worked out the kinks in his game since then.
Verdasco’s path to the quarters has been more eventful. Tommy Haas was a few points away from knocking the Spaniard out of the tournament, but Verdasco found a way to win. John Isner also took the opening set of their round of 16 match, but Verdasco played well to take the win in 4.
This has the potential to be a fantastic hard court match. Djokovic has worked himself into fine form, and Verdasco is always a threat on a faster surface. The outcome of the match will be decided by how many unforced errors Verdasco donates. Djokovic will try to force him into going for too much. If the Spaniard can resist doing so, he will have a shot at the upset. If he cannot, Djokovic will advance to his first Slam semifinal of the year.

tomnjerry2 , 9/9/09 9:12 AM
Waiting for tonight.....
This will be a fantastic match, no doubt. Nole will get this, I'm sure. In 4.
Ajde, Noleee! <3
Mriiidula, you don't have to worry about that. We'll be here. :)
OllyK , 9/9/09 9:18 AM
OllyK, this is a difficult one for me. I like both players. Novak and Verdy. what to do? Novak is sparkling under the radar, ever so quietly, but i think he will come out in full force tonight. both players will be "on fire" - the tourny is "hotting" up - and am gonna get my mexican tortilla wrap all ready for tonight! hot! hot! hot!
maxi , 9/9/09 10:59 AM
I'm so excited, I even don't know what to say, praying to God our guy would show the same level of playing as he did with Stepanek, wish you all the best dearest Novak, c'mon boy...
gordana , 9/9/09 11:03 AM
Maxi, I understand your doubt... Dasco is a great player. Agressive. Just like Nole. I lenjoy watching two agressive players on court. Real battlefield. Dasco showed us what he can do on AO this year...But, as a huge huge fan, all my heart goes to Nole, of course. And I really think that he will get this one in 4. He is more patient in crucial moments than Dasco. I hope he will show us that tonight. It will be the key. And now, when AM lost, I think he will be even more motivated to try to regain the ranking he deserves. He reaaally needs this one. :) Soo...
Come on, Noleeee! <3
OllyK , 9/9/09 11:31 AM
gordana, i just want to say (along with OllyK too), how "sweet" your posts are about Novak and what fabulous supportive fans you are - i've never seen you say anything unkind about any of the other players who play on the tour (in my short time on TT) - there is a lot of respect for novak on tennis.x, if you happen to "pop" over there - (yes, a few comments about murray - but not in a horrid way - ), and I have respect for that. so, like i say, so hard for me (cos i like both of them), but would be nice for novak to come through - and kind of show murray what he is made of (not that he needs to), and he then gets ever closer to the no. 3 position. so great luck to gordana/ollyk and to verdy fans - its a tough call!
maxi , 9/9/09 12:18 PM
thanks ollyk :)
here's to seeing novak in the semis! *cheers*
mriiidula , 9/9/09 1:57 PM
Oh,man! this is a hard one for me cause i like them both.(cause rafa is on the other side of the draw:))
Novak has more experience!
Nando seems like he is comming into his own(he is going to have surguery after theUS Open on his foot and his abs is bothering him also)
IDK...I want verdasco to take Novak out because i don't think that Novak can beat fed but if Verdasco wins he might give fed a hard time because he is a lefty...IDK
Well...it's all about which one will rafa(if he wins his next match) benefit from for me so....
But i like Novak...IDK...he** ..I'll just get my popcorn ready and enjoy!
alik , 9/9/09 2:10 PM
Maxi, thank you. I (and Gordana too, I know:)) always speak from heart. If you like some player, there is no need to hate all of his opponents. It doesn't mean (or show) that you love your favorite more. That is my motto. You are the best that could happen to TT, trust me. :) There is so much hate and unreasonable discussions around here ... You are always moderate in your posts. I respect that. :)
Mriiidula, you are welcome! :) For the semis! *cheers*
OllyK , 9/9/09 2:29 PM
um alik...what part of the 0-3 H2H makes you think Nando is capable of beating Fed, especially considering that the H2H can be broken down to 0-6 sets? between the 2, Nole is more capable of beating him by far.
stu , 9/9/09 2:31 PM
OllyK - are you and Gordana the same poster? (personal question - sorry - no need to answer0 - i read between the lines sometimes (and get it wrong!) - just interesting-
stu - hey! we talking about federer here! (I'm watching you! :)).
verdy and novak - so hard to choose people. but i think novak will win-tho' verdy could "explode" like he did at AO 'gainst rafa in SF. I am going to enjoy it tho'.
maxi , 9/9/09 2:40 PM
No, no, we are not the same poster... :))) I know Gordana from Novak's official site...her posts (on Serbian) are something most beautiful you can read. There is so much love in them. Lots of fans say that they cry while reading them, so you can imagine. That is why I said that I know she speaks from her heart, too. :)
OllyK , 9/9/09 2:45 PM
haha maxi, i was only talking about abilities. i didn't say i _want_ it to happen...i wouldn't do that if i knew what was good for me :P
stu , 9/9/09 2:52 PM
just so you know stu! just so you know! :)
maxi , 9/9/09 4:39 PM
Verdasko is gonna win
goran , 9/9/09 4:44 PM
i just read on tennis-x that if rafa goes out to gonzo and nole wins the tournament, nole is #2 in the world! again, not saying its what i wish for but its fun to discuss probabilities!
stu , 9/9/09 4:50 PM
stu - its all pretty tanked up right now - the different probabilities. I had thought tho' that watever, novak would still remain no. 4 (but obviously edge closer to murray) (once rafa moves to no. 2 in a weeks time) - but i might be wrong.
goran - more explanation please or is it gut instinct?
maxi , 9/9/09 4:55 PM
what? that is a monster 'if' , stu.
what's the weather in NYC?
zoey234 , 9/9/09 4:57 PM
rainy apparently. i dont see it yet, but its expected later in the day.
i just did the math, and its true that if rafa loses the qf and nole wins it all, they will be #3 and #2 respectively. fat chance of that happening tho. however, if rafa makes it to the semis/finals and nole wins it all, they are #2 and #3 which would be nice!
but then the madrid points come off and change everything, so nole might be #3 even if he doesnt win the USO - not sure...
stu , 9/9/09 5:03 PM
i just really want novak back in the number 3 position. the '4' looks weird next to his name.
mriiidula , 9/9/09 5:08 PM
Stu, I don't think that Nando can beat federer. All i was trying to say is that if Nando beat Novak MAYBE he can wear federer down or something.(IDK)
I know that federer is the Man and is hard to beat.I was just thinking hypothetically...Chill
alik , 9/9/09 6:24 PM
alik - what does (IDK) mean?
novak fans (ollyk, gordana) - a clip from an article initially about federer which also discussed novak - for interest - but sounds positive.
On paper the Novak Djokovic-Fernando Verdasco quarter-final, also scheduled for Wednesday, is a much more evenly balanced encounter with the fourth-seeded Serb, the 2008 Australian Open champion and the losing finalist here in 2007, going up against the 10th-seeded Spaniard, who has broken through this year with a run into the Australian Open semi-finals.
Djokovic, with new American coach Todd Martin in his corner, agreed that Verdasco was playing the best tennis of his career.
"He has gained a lot of strength. He feels confident on the court," Djokovic said. "He hits the ball very well. He improved his game a lot generally comparing to the last couple of years."
But he feels that his own game is coming around after a slight slump that saw him lose his world No. 3 status to Andy Murray.
"I have had some ups and downs this year, but I believe I can get far in the tournament the way I was playing in the first two rounds and today was very satisfying," he said after his straight-sets demolition of Radek Stepanek in the fourth round.
enjoy the match.
maxi , 9/9/09 6:35 PM
First come first...to Maxi...
I have read your post how Rafa profited from injury...( didn't understand it properly...) so I reacted in uncivilised manner. I have read few of your posts lately i only thing that I have to say is...my deepest apologies. I mostly regret my words...
...and for tonight...I hope that Nole will find the strenght...( I know that he had heart )...enough for real battle. For Verdasco only compliments for game in this season. But I hope the uso is finished for him this evening.
Nole raly deserves little bit of luck...he's such wonderful person
zare , 9/9/09 7:30 PM
One thing I have noticed about Nole in the past months is that he uses the word 'patience' alot. He is not the same player we saw a year ago. He has definitely matured. When he has had a good match, he has said he remained patient. When he has lost, he has said he wasn't patient. I think if he keeps his wits about him and remains patient, then he will win over Nando!
fan4tennis , 9/9/09 7:39 PM
zare - no harm done - am not sure what you are referring to (honestly). things can easily be misread on forums - but i dont think i have read something from you to me in an "uncivilised" way - so really - everything is fine.
roger/rafa/novak - great for tennis. of course roger is "up there" for me - but novak has grown so much over last 12 months - rafa is well-rafa- ah...zare, i think you did misread - let me try and explain if i may - you refer to me (it wasnt me per se, but a blog/article) - where i commented on "rafa profiting from injury" - now i understand. He "profited" only because of the fact that he was able to rest from his injury (that is a positive - if he didnt rest zare, he COULD have been out of tennis forever, and that would be AWFUL. i can see how you could have misread it - but its easily done and i hope that i have explained it better to you? (totally my fault for not explaining myself clearly enough).
maxi , 9/9/09 7:47 PM
game ON people! hold on to your seats...
stu , 9/9/09 9:17 PM
Here we go!!! I wondered which one will be in orange shirt... :) Both of them!!!! :) OMG, they look same!!!
It's windy, I'd say.... ;/
Go, Nole!!!!!
OllyK , 9/9/09 9:28 PM
if you look at the stats, Nole is playing just a wee bit better. hope he keeps that up and it gets him the W.
stu , 9/9/09 10:12 PM
1 set down , 2 to go. :) Nole doesn't look impressive, but it's been enough till now, thank God...Ajde, Noleee!
OllyK , 9/9/09 10:35 PM
Ackk! Broken. Good thing its early in the set...
stu , 9/9/09 10:47 PM
ajde Nole!!!
Dificult match...both players look...I don't know...somehow tired...not nice to watch but it will be hard...
Hope Nole will find the way for Nando's sec. serve...
zare , 9/9/09 10:51 PM
verdasco will sprint through the 2nd probably.
posmatrac , 9/9/09 10:54 PM
ok..losing a set might bring his fighting spirit back...
stu , 9/9/09 10:56 PM
Broken twice!! OMG, what's happening?!!
OllyK , 9/9/09 10:56 PM
double break...
Nole is looking a little bit without plan...woooooooring me to much....
zare , 9/9/09 10:56 PM
will just check the result in few hours ....
posmatrac , 9/9/09 11:06 PM
no need posmatrac - ill tell you right now. 7-6 6-1 6-3 6-2
stu , 9/9/09 11:07 PM
i meant 6-7, of course.
stu , 9/9/09 11:09 PM
you mean 7-6 1-6 3-6 2-6? quite possible.
posmatrac , 9/9/09 11:10 PM
I think so stu...Nole's forehand is O.F.F. ... He can't hit the ball properly with his forehand...
Ice , 9/9/09 11:11 PM
Stu I am hoping that your predictions are wrong...finaly 1 game...lets see some momentum changing...
Wake up Nole!!!
zare , 9/9/09 11:25 PM
YEEEEES....
Here we go
zare , 9/9/09 11:31 PM
zare, everyone knows that i hope he proves me wrong! things looking brighter already :D
stu , 9/9/09 11:32 PM

stu , 9/9/09 11:42 PM
I know. Stu I know...lets hope... :-)
zare , 9/9/09 11:43 PM

stu , 9/10/09 12:04 AM
My God....
Whoever win or loose...this is match I would like to forget quickly...nervecracking...
Nando has become little to confident...maybe Nole was patient enough...
C'mon Nole...one more....
zare , 9/10/09 12:06 AM
doeas anyone have a spare heart?
posmatrac , 9/10/09 12:22 AM
does anyone wanna guess which of these 2 has a better shot at federer?
stu , 9/10/09 12:31 AM
4:1...It seems that Nole survived storm...
I would be happier if it was without Nando's injury...but I cant see how Nole can go dawn after two breaks...
Go Nole....Idemo...!!!
zare , 9/10/09 12:33 AM
posmatrac I would give you mine but it's little overheated now
zare , 9/10/09 12:39 AM
ooh..you'd give him your heart? :P
stu , 9/10/09 12:45 AM
zare thanks, much appreciated :), nole is in the semis, woohooo. congrats to dasco for the effort, like the guy.
posmatrac , 9/10/09 12:45 AM

Bravo Nole...finishing in style...stu, posmatrac, gordana, ollyk...we are still in game.
Nole the best!!!
zare , 9/10/09 12:45 AM
nando did something to aggravate his stomach muscle. well zare, this was the stroke of luck we were hoping for. now he'd better bring his A game on saturday...
stu , 9/10/09 12:46 AM
Ok...I'm still alive! Horrible match. Horrible. What happened with "last 4 rounds Nole"?! Every time we say it is gonna be a great match sth like this come up...so, lets say next one is going to be horrible..maybe then we will be watching some great tennis. :)
OllyK , 9/10/09 12:46 AM
OK...people good night...back to World of Warcraft :-)
zare , 9/10/09 12:49 AM

OllyK , 9/10/09 12:50 AM
Yes, Ollyk, I will be watching Nole vs Roger from the stands for the 3rd consecutive year!
I am also looking on craigslist for affordable tickets to the finals coz y'know...you never know! :D
stu , 9/10/09 3:49 AM
"does anyone wanna guess which of these 2 has a better shot at federer?"
both have equal chances of winning = 0.
posmatrac , 9/10/09 4:08 AM
lets hope he doesn't get bageled at least..
stu , 9/10/09 5:06 AM
thanks for the updates guys!
yikes, from what ive heard (or rather, read) nole has no shot against fed in the semis if he played like how he did today. he needs to bring it.
mriiidula , 9/10/09 6:47 AM
novak fans! I'll be honest - i watched the first 3 sets - (just before the final game in the third set), I didnt know which way it was going to go ? but stoked for ALL of you. Novak did it, he is back. (who cares if you had some scary moments? thats what makes it soooo exciting - tense yeah - but hey. well done! OllyK/gordana :). see you on semi finals day -
stu! you kept that quiet! I would like (please) a FULL account of movement, facial expression, what aftershave both federer and novak are wearing - can you "smell" it from where you will be standing?). OMG stu - you are so lucky! I am INSANELY MAD WITH UTTER JEALOUSY (not really) - enjoy saturday (give me an idea of what you look like - so i can look out for you!) -
maxi , 9/10/09 7:16 AM
stu...shout "ajde Nole" during the match for all of us, Nole's fans from TT.. :) Make us proud! :D We will be here listening ;) and waiting for your impressions.. :)
Maxi, it was much more tense that I expected... :) But, as I said, win is a win... :) Congrats to your guy, too! :) See you at the same time at the same thread.... ;) Should be interesting. :)
OllyK , 9/10/09 9:02 AM
yeah Ollyk. go:roge:go! good luck to novak.
olly, what does "ajde" mean?
maxi , 9/10/09 10:42 AM
maxi, "ajde" is in Serbian. It means: "Come on!" :) Good luck to Fed too. :)
OllyK , 9/10/09 11:39 AM
Colors may fade, the sun may not shine, the moon may not be bright, heartbeats may stop, lives may pass but my endless love and support for Novak I'll treasure till the day of my heart stops.
Keep going dearest boy...
gordana , 9/10/09 2:51 PM
Players should not be allowed to wear the same colours, it's very difficult to follow.
