  • Murray odds narrow for UK bookies

    9/7/09 5:35 PM | Johan Lindahl
Murray odds narrow for UK bookies British bookmakers fancy the chances of home hero Andy Murray after the Scot swept into the fourth round of the US Open over American Taylor Dent with ease.

Last year's losing finalist Murray stands an overwhelming 1/14 (1.07) to overcome Croatian Marin Cilic in the fourth round, according to Ladbrokes of London. In addition, Murray is now 3/1 (4.00) to lift the trophy next Sunday.

But Murray's not the only game on offer, with five-time champion Roger Federer 4/5 (1.80) to retain his crown for a sixth straight year and injury-plagued Rafa Nadal is 7/1 (8.00) to overcome the odds and win the only major missing from his collection.

"Murray has looked impressive, but he still faces the problem of an in-form Federer", said a spokesman.

In women's play, punters are piling on for comeback queen Kim Clijsters, now an impressive 3/1 (4.00) to take the women’s title after dumping out Venus Williams as she returned to tennis after becoming a mother and missing morethan two years of competition.

i would say bookies saw nadal receive treatment for abdominal injury.

posmatrac , 9/7/09 6:32 PM

I must say Murray is the favourite at the present situation

torres9 , 9/7/09 10:23 PM

no he isn't torres.

maxi , 9/7/09 11:18 PM

Murray is favourite to reach the final.

cable , 9/8/09 1:57 AM

cable, its all a conspiracy. the moment one of the bookies "favourites" is injured, has an "off day", the stakes go out the window - they are a shower. they change every day. I agree with posmatrac. I think rafa gonna be fine and I think he gonna reach the final - and he'll meet fed there. I really do.

maxi , 9/8/09 2:23 AM

A bit premature I think. The serious competition doesn't really start until the QFs.

delpo AND rafa AND fed is a very tall order. Our muzz can do it, as long as he doesn't drift off every time he gets in front and start tiring himself out with 5-setters.

alex , 9/8/09 9:57 AM

Murray will eventually win a Slam and I see no reason why it is not this Slam.
Few things going for him:-

a) Nadal is not 100%
b) Fed seems too relaxed and over-confident
c) Delpo fitness doesnt improve in 1 week IMO
d) Djoker still finding form and lost 3 times in a row to Muzza

torres9 , 9/8/09 11:03 AM

disagree with you torres (again!).

a) Nadal may not be 100%, but then who realllly is? nadal still has his fighting spirit - no one can take that away. If he didnt think he could do well in this tourny, he would not have entered in the first place.

b) fed does NOT seem too relaxed OR over-confident? where did you get that from? Go read his interview - he very "aware" of his game, of what "he" has to do to win. If he is relaxed it because the chains of the pressure of winning AT LEAST ONE SLAM THAT ALWAYS ELUDED HIM - the FO - is out of the way. Wimby was a bonus - if he relaxed it not because he is 'over-confident', it because he is playing "more freely" and still with "skill and technique". He ALWAYS does not bring his A game to the table during the early rounds - you should know that.

c) Delpo is playing well and is ALWAYS dangerous and very much surprises his opponents. he also NOT frightened of Murray, having already beaten him this year.

d) Novak is doing just fine. he may have lost 3 times to Murray, but he is out for revenge against him and has nothing to lose. Pressure is on murray from british press. Do you know - a two page spread across the dailys this a.m. talking about the "height" of tennis players - all comparing themselves to MURRAY. not federer, not rafa, not novak, but murray. And they NEVER refer to him on sky as world no. 2 (or rarely), its always BRISTISH NUMBER ONE - EMPHASIS ADDED.

Fed all the way torres. All the way.

maxi , 9/8/09 11:32 AM

a) that's a pathetic attitude to have if Nadal only enters a tournament he think he can do well.

b) Overconfidence is why Fed has losses to Nadal, Djoker and Muzza.

c) Not frightened but when your body shuts down, fear is not a factor

d) Novak lost those 3 times in finals.m

torres9 , 9/8/09 12:20 PM

torres, you are talking crap. you are not a fedfan in my view. AT ALL.

maxi , 9/8/09 2:54 PM

torres, i feel i need to clarify my above statement. I 100% enjoy reading what you have to say, but you confuse me. so i am going to break it down into dairy milk chunks - dont want to argue that you think this is a "pathetic attitude" - but hope that i can expand my thoughts on federer and whether you understand where i am coming from. (I shouldnt have said you are talking crap - because that is your opinion - its just different to mine).

Reading your posts yesterday torres, you came across/come across as having very little "faith" in federer - that being the case, why on earth do you support him? I just dont get it. Am not saying he is without fault - of course he is - absolutely - but to say that he is NOT PLAYING WELL? is just rubbish (imo). Did you watch his match yesterday? the only match he played so far which is a bit "off" was against hewitt, and there were a number of elements contributing to his game - for example, you talked about his "slipping". Did you read my reply? Did you see the match? Did you hear what fleming said? It was a sweat patch on the court, fed slipped and got up within about 4 seconds - yet you attributed that to "poor play". Not so. a win is a win. he won.

fed didnt lose to Nadal, joker or muzza because of "overconfidence". He played them and they beat him because they were better than him "on the day". He has a ton of confidence and to be fair torres (which I dont feel you are being at the moment), you are talking about fed's losses "prior to madrid", so why dont you make it clear that since madrid, federer has been working hard, training hard, (go read what he has been doing on bleacher - that might change your mind). You know fed beat rafa, novak and murray this year - that will have given him tons of confidence - and he should have it and he should be proud of it - you put him down torres - not good.

secondly, "not frightened but when your body shuts down, fear is not a factor" - i dont understand what you mean here. But I dont think that federer is afraid of anyone except himself and history and the pressure he puts on himself. he has great strategists in his team who work out (along with fed - the best in the business), about how to counter act a player's game - you discard it completely.

Yesterday, you had all but written federer off - saying "you wouldnt be surprised if ISNER met fed in final and went on to beat him (I think convo with zoey?), it could have been zoey that said this torr, and if so, apologies (was late when i read it) - but to me, that shows little faith - i guess it is something i am not used to when i watch federer play - i accept the losses, torr, but i dont write him off before a match - ever. I believe he has one of the best returns in the business and this "weak backhand" is pooh!.He has the second best backhand in the business (imo) and there are a lot of others that have stated this on the record, saying that this is under rated. so for all your critique on his technique, i dont think you have been fair here at all.

you seem to "hedge your bets a lot as well" - I may misread things torres, and if so, apologies, but you change from fed, to murray, to isner, to verdasco, back to fed, then i get lost. You are entitled to think and do what you want tho - absolutely. Its just that I am a federer fan through and through. (sorry for long post everyone!).

maxi , 9/8/09 3:16 PM

maxi, one needs to just open my laptop and open the file directory C:Desktop/Dowloads/RF to know which player I support and I can tell you RF does not stand for Ra Fa.

Anyway, I am an analyst. I based my predictions solely on what I see on TV. I love it when my predictions to be wrong especially in FO and WImby where I thought Nadal and Murray gonna win it.

I will hands down debate infinitely with people that Fed is the GOAT because like I mentioned, I watched other players play, none is like Fed.

Whether or not Fed wins the present situation do not change my opinion that he is the best ever, even if doesn't win 1 more Slam. To me, 15 Slams is the indicator of his phenomenal abilities but even if he had 7 Slams, I will say he's the best to have ever picked the racket because IN MY BOOK, the ultimate tennis player is the one with the best mastery of the tennis ball.

Thank you. Applause please.

torres9 , 9/8/09 6:35 PM

brav-o, torres! *whistling*

now, what's going on with TT?

zoey234 , 9/8/09 6:50 PM

ah torres. you get a round of applause from me, as well as a bow - but buddy - you havent answered one of my "queries" above.

Thank you. Applause please :)

maxi , 9/8/09 7:08 PM

"not frightened but when your body shuts down, fear is not a factor" is directed to Delpo, not Fed.

Overconfidence is Fed's problem sometimes. When Nadal beat him in AO2009 and WImby2009 he was leading in some of the sets that a focused Fed won't let slip. He just thought he will win by serving it out.

And against Muzza how many times have he lead the guy a set and lost.

torres9 , 9/8/09 7:58 PM

hi torr, okay - youve clarified delpo - understood.

you mean wimby 08, i take it? - well. I disagree still torr with "overconfidence". fed gave an interview 2/3 days ago, as Marcus Buckland (sky sports) commented on it - that fed had said how "unconfident" he felt coming off the AO 09, and that he had to "seriously regroup" after that - and he did - so that is why he needs a bit more of a quantum leap of torres tornado - if you know what am trying to say - not the other way - if you wanna analyse the AO results/stats/ were brilliant from fed for 4 sets. The fifth set, second game in, look at how he served. Its so clear. Look at his back. That had NOTHING to do with "confidence". It was a back problem. He didnt retire. He never retires, its not in his wilson bag torres. but am gonna leave that for another time - okay.

Murray. he the new kid on the block. he beat fed h2h 6:3. but fed will pull it back - and murray (apart from shanghai - go see the back again) - played better on the day. in many ways, as i said to carrie, the fact that he suffered these losses is good - cos since then, he only got better and regigged his game to improve for the future. and in most matches against murray, fed took the first set - so perhaps with murray it is more of a confidence thing than the others, but i 100% believe he now has that back, returned and firing, thank you very much!

maxi , 9/8/09 8:18 PM

how does muzza get so few first serves in, and yet win a large fraction of his points on serve?

stu , 9/8/09 8:25 PM

that's easy stu! It's a conspiracy!

maxi , 9/8/09 8:39 PM

haha..in that case i hope marin is in on it, coz he has a great shot at winning this from what i've seen so far...

stu , 9/8/09 9:00 PM

his wrist is injured - left one

is muzza napping?

zoey234 , 9/8/09 9:10 PM

I wonder if Davydenko is betting on Murray to come back ...

SenorPlaid , 9/8/09 9:35 PM

i've never seen cilic play like this stu! its a conspiracy!

maxi , 9/8/09 9:35 PM

How are those odds looking now?

SenorPlaid , 9/8/09 10:16 PM

you should take some time and read this:

posmatrac , 9/8/09 10:50 PM

LOL... Guess I jinxed Murray and also Isner by saying they are gonna make to the semis.

Oh my, I do not have a career in match-predicting.

Rafa-Rog final is a big possibility now.

torres9 , 9/8/09 10:58 PM

Oh my, those bookies are going to crucify Murray for losing.

alik , 9/8/09 11:06 PM

torres, you are predicting again :)

posmatrac , 9/8/09 11:11 PM

poor muzza. now i really do feel sorry. the press puts so much pressure on him, imo too soon.

rafa-rog is the dream match for us open, torres. i pretty much struck out today too.

zoey234 , 9/8/09 11:15 PM

haha now you feel like reading the BBC comments eh, posmatrac?

stu , 9/8/09 11:26 PM

stu, it's hilarious, brits can be funny too, good stuff.

posmatrac , 9/8/09 11:32 PM

those brit journos really do shine! lol

zoey234 , 9/8/09 11:36 PM

pah! went down without a fight, there is no shame in losing, but as soon as he realised Cilic had something about him, he looked like he wanted to go home. When are Safina and Murray getting engaged?"
