Andy Murray cruises into the fourth round of the U.S. Open on Sunday night. He defeats Taylor Dent in straight sets, ending a short but sweet run in New York by the once-retired American.
Andy Murray defeated Taylor Dent 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 on Sunday night in Arthur Ashe Stadium to book his place in the second week of the U.S. Open. Murray needed just 90 minutes to set up a fourth-round clash with Marin Cilic. Earlier in the night, Cilic rolled over Denis Istomin in straight sets.
Murray is not a good matchup for Dent, as the world No. 2 owns arguably the best return on tour and thrives against players who serve and volley. That's exactly what happened in this one, as Dent won only 57 percent of his net approaches. The veteran American's 61 percent serving and two aces were nowhere close to giving him a chance to impose his will on the heavily-favored Murray.
After going down an immediate break in the first set, Dent showed signs of life by breaking right back. But he soon gave back the advantage and never got back on track. Murray played a perfect match, passing Dent with what seemed like great ease and keeping the ball in play from the baseline (he made only 13 errors, compared to an impressive 39 winners
"You know, obviously returned well today, and always liked it when guys come forward against me and serve and volley," said Murray.
"It's nothing but positive for me," Dent reflected of his performance this week, which featured an epic five-set win over Ivan Navarro in round two. "This is a huge step forward in my progression. What I'm gonna take from it? Again, I hate losing. I'm glad to be back, but I'm sorry I'm not sticking around."
