    Gonzalez knocks out Berdych to reach fourth round Fernando Gonzalez secured safe passage into the round of 16 at the US Open on Sunday, defeating Tomas Berdych in straight sets. The 11th-seeded Chilean is joined in the fourth round by Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Gael Monfils.

    Fernando Gonzalez advanced to the round of 16 on Sunday, following his straight-sets defeat of Tomas Berdych, 7-5, 6-4, 6-4. The 11th seed, who did not lose serve during the two-hour and 12-minute match, earned a critical break at 5-5 in the opening set. Gonzalez secured two additional breaks in the contest, snagging a lead at 2-2 in the second set and 1-1 in the third. The 29-year-old Chilean hit his 16th ace of the day on match point. Gonzalez ended the match with 29 winners and is through to the US Open round of 16 for the third time.

    The 11th seed faces 7th seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the fourth round. The Frenchman took out compatriot Julien Benneteau in straight sets on Sunday, 7-6, 6-2, 6-4.

    Seventh seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga continued his smooth progress through the draw, knocking out countryman Julien Benneteau in straight sets. The seventh-seeded Frenchman, yet to drop a set at the Open, saved three of 3 break point chances to record a win in 132 minutes. After taking the opening set tie-break, Tsonga broke the Benneteau serve at 1-1 and 3-1 in set two. The seventh seed kept the momentum, earning an immediate break to lead 2-0 in the third set. Tsonga ended the day with 10 aces and 32 winners.

    With the victory, the 24-year-old is set to make his first-ever appearance in the US Open round of 16.

    (13) Gael Monfils def. Jose Acasuso 6-3, 6-4, 1-0 (retired)

    Gael Monfils is through to the fourth round, following opponent Jose Acasuso’s retirement with a knee injury. The 13th-seeded Frenchman led throughout the match, having broken the Argentine once per set. Monfils fought off his only break point at 3-4 in the second set, crushing his fourth ace of the evening. The 23-year-old had snagged a break of serve to take a 1-0 advantage in the third set when Acasuso called it a night.

    Monfils will take on World No. 3 Rafael Nadal in the round of 16. The Spaniard bested compatriot and 32nd seed Nicolas Almagro in straight sets early Sunday, 7-5, 6-4, 6-4.
